Reports to the Director of Estimating, the Estimator supports the estimating department and helps develop price proposals by performing estimating duties such as bid document management and organization, preparing take-offs for construction projects and researching information for incorporation into bids.


Primary / Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Gather and organize tender documents; tracks bidding timelines and due dates; tracks bid results and statistics.
  • Tracks and follows upcoming projects within SharePoint and updates weekly.
  • Supports estimators in creating an initial construction schedule and cash flow forecast
  • Organize and reviews tender documents and attends prebid meetings to determine scope of work and required contents of estimates.
  • Analyzes tender documents, plans, specs and other documentation to prepare time, cost, materials and labour estimates. Prepares accurate quantity surveys and takeoffs as required.
  • Performs detailed material lists based on the tender documents and specs and forwards to Material Manager for pricing.
  • Reviews and incorporates historical data from prior estimates, purchase agreements and subcontracts in order to gain information for current bids.
  • Supports estimators with analyzing and evaluating bids from subcontractors for their completeness and accuracy in scope of work. Prepares documents to solicit subcontractor/vendor for pricing.
  • Prepares submission and coordinates for bid day with other staff involved in the estimating process.
  • Ensures compliance with the tender documents/requirements.
  • Ensures all general conditions of the tender document are met i.e. insurance/bonding/special requirements.
  • Prepares and presents project turn over package upon award of contract.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:


Education, Training & Experience:


  • High School graduation plus postsecondary training in a relevant field.
  • Relevant experience preferably gained in the construction or railway industry is considered an additional asset.

  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret drawings and specifications
  • Proficiency in reviewing contract documents

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:


  • This is fulltime office position;
  • Occasional weekend or night work may be required;
  • Occasional exposure to outdoor construction sites in all weather conditions may be required;
  • When required, majority of the field work is on and around live track (trains);
  • Work may be in urban, rural or isolated areas. Accommodations and transportation will be provided, if required.
