The Unit


The Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (The Centre) is a faculty development unit that works in collaboration with faculty and graduate students to provide leadership, expertise, and support in fulfilling the teaching and learning mission of the University of Manitoba.

The Centre contributes to the practice and scholarship of teaching through guidance, collaborative problem-solving, and research with respect to teaching and learning effectiveness, curriculum planning, and institutional policies and infrastructure to optimize the learning and teaching experiences of students and faculty.


The Position


This position will lead the Programs Team in the broad work of teaching competence development across both the Fort Garry and Bannatyne campuses.

This role will support The Centre as it continues to take on new initiatives and support existing programming, in support of teaching and learning.

In addition to leading the Programs team at the University of Manitoba, the incumbent will represent The Centre on institutional or provincial level committees.


Day-to-day activities Include (but are not limited to):

  • Consult within the University of Manitoba with faculty on best practices in teaching and learning within post-secondary environments.
  • Provide pedagogical feedback to faculty around teaching practices and the design of course/curriculum materials in postsecondary education.
  • Supervise and provide teaching mentorship for faculty within various teaching certificate programs.
  • Mentor faculty in teaching programs.
  • Initiate and maintain relationships with faculty to create a network for teaching support and development.
  • Conduct classroom observations and provide feedback to faculty on teaching practices in postsecondary education.
  • Supervise and lead team members of The Centre in the development and implementation of educational programs for faculty and graduate students (e.g. TLC, GTP levels 1 and 2, and ISW programs).
  • Oversee the daily operations, ongoing maintenance, and development of the TLC, GTP levels 1 and 2, and ISW programs.
  • Supervise the creation and execution of Centre teaching workshops.
  • Participate in the design, and lead in the development and delivery of various faculty development initiatives within The Centre and external University of Manitoba Community.
  • Lead the work of project team members on designated educational and/or faculty development projects to organize content and meetings, coordinate project, and produce deliverables when required.
  • Conduct detailed operational preparation for faculty development projects including schedules, progress coordination, deliverables, and milestones of projects.
  • Supervise and allocate consultations and custom workshops to team members.
  • Manage team members responsible for course design and delivery.
  • Allocate team members to the creation and renewal of teaching resources.
  • Manage HR related support and guidance to Educational Developers including conducting annual performance reviews, tracking vacation/ leave days and other HR duties as needed.
  • Collaborate with other teams within the Centre to complete faculty development projects including Educational Technologies, Flexible Learning, Research and Evaluation, and Operations.
  • Develop evidencebased, pedagogically sound resources (both print and electronic) for teaching and curriculum development within postsecondary education. Resources to be used for web development, faculty development, presentations, program development, handbooks, etc.
  • Contribute to the development of the Centre's educational programming by writing, editing, and updating evidencebased documents for teaching and curriculum development within postsecondary education.
  • Research evidencebased practices in higher education through literature reviews to develop resources and handbooks for faculty and graduate students.
  • Consult with faculties and departments on curriculum development and those undergoing curriculum review or accreditation.
  • Develop resources to support faculties during curriculum development, review or accreditation.
  • Participate in and supervise the teams and resources allocated to Curriculum Renewal.
  • Remain current with established and emerging trends in educational development and pedagogical practices within postsecondary teaching and curriculum. (Some travel may be required).

Qualifications:
Formal Education and Training


  • A Bachelor of Education (B. Ed) and a Master's degree in Education (M.Ed.) or related field.
  • 35 years program/course development training/experience within postsecondary educational environments.
  • Postsecondary teaching experience, working in multiple teaching and learning modalities: facetoface, blended and remote/onlin
