New employees must provide documentation/proof of full COVID-19 vaccination status, a 2-step TB screening, as well as proof of immunity to measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (chickenpox) prior to their start date at St.

Mary's General Hospital. Staff will require clearance from Employee Health and Wellness before they are able to begin any position within SMGH.


Position Summary:


The Device Clinic & Heart Rhythm Cardiovascular Technologist (CVT) is a member of a multidisciplinary team providing care to patients with cardiac implanted electrical devices (CIED); such as pacemaker, CRT, ICD, and Loop Recorder or having a CIED implanted, within a patient/family centered model of care.

Within the Device Clinic, the CVT will work in collaboration with Registered Nurses (i.e., RN and RN-EC), EP Physicians, and the patient/family in the assessment, planning and delivery of safe and quality patient care.

The CVT will also work in collaboration with the Heart Rhythm team during the implantation of CIEDs. Under the direction of an implant Physician, the CVT will program device functions.

The CVT is responsible for following the practice guidelines of their professional affiliations (i.e., CSCT, CACPT) and strictly adhering to procedural guidelines while working in an intense and highly collaborative environment, to achieve excellence and quality in patient care.


Position Responsibilities:


  • Assesses the health of the patient on registration/admission and systemically collects data in order to complete device assessment
  • Acquires, maintains, and integrates a knowledge base from biomedical and physical sciences including physiology, pathophysiology, and the fundamentals of electronics
  • Acquires and demonstrates the technical knowledge and clinical skills regarding device interrogation
  • Documents observations and communicates relevant information to the health care team, Device & Arrhythmia Clinic RN and/or
  • Medical Lead to assist in the care of patients
  • Adheres to established standards to ensure a safe environment and promotes the delivery of optimal health care for the patient
  • Participates in patient and family education related to device function, interdisciplinary team conferences, and planning conferences as needed
  • Performance of measurements required in the evaluation of cardiac device implant procedure
  • Awareness of sterile fields within the procedural room (OR/Cardiac Catheterization Suite) and to follow ORNAC standards
  • Provide technical (programming and analyzing) support to the physician and Heart Rhythm team
  • Collaborate with the Program Manager, Medical Lead, and industry in the operations of the Heart Rhythm Program, including equipment maintenance, supplies and inventory
  • Maintain and facilitate the efficient, safe and effective sequencing of procedural events
  • Collaborates and communicates with the Heart Rhythm team regarding the coordination of pre, intra and post procedure activities and care of the patient
  • Maintain records, documentation and Quality Assurance data reports
  • Maintains a high level of expertise through participation in formal and informal education programs

Position Requirements:


  • Registered member of the Canadian Society of Cardiology Technologists (CSCT)
  • Graduate of Applied Health Sciences program
  • Cardiovascular Technology Diploma
  • Minimum of three (3) years' experience working in the areas of Implanted Cardiac Devices/Heart Rhythm/Pacemaker and Device
  • Clinic with the ability to display advanced clinical assessment and analytical skills
  • Previous experience working in Cardiac EP Lab and/or Interventional Suite
  • Successful completion of the Certification Exam of the CSCT and demonstrates ongoing occupational competencies as defined by CSCT
  • Completion/In progress of pacemaker/electrophysiology courses including but not limited to:
  • Concepts in Pacemakers
  • Concepts in Electrophysiology
  • Cardiac Rhythm Device Implant
  • Pacemaker/ICD Followup
  • Functional knowledge of computer technology and able to adapt readily to rapid changes in new technologies
  • Proficient in the use of Cerner and Microsoft office
  • Ability to critically think and problem solve within an interdisciplinary team as well as successfully prioritize and adapt to
