The University of Alberta, its buildings, labs, and research stations are primarily located on the traditional territory of Cree, Blackfoot, Métis, Nakota Sioux, Iroquois, Dene, and Ojibway/Saulteaux/Anishinaabe nations; lands that are now known as part of Treaties 6, 7, and 8 and homeland of the Métis.

The Department of CSD is among the largest speech-language pathology education programs in Canada.

The Department currently consists of 11 tenure track and 7 academic teaching faculty members, supported by staff at the Department and Faculty level.

Starting in Fall 2024, the MScSLP program will be offered in a distributed education model across 2 campuses in Alberta - Edmonton and Camrose.

Approximately 90 students will be admitted in Fall 2024 across both campuses, with 20 of those seats reserved for students from Saskatchewan.


Faculty members have diverse research programs in areas including developmental language disorders and phonological development in children, literacy, multilingual language development, neurogenic communication disorders, speech science, hearing science and head and neck cancer rehabilitation.

The department has community connections with several health care centres in Edmonton, including the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital.

Faculty members have close connections (e.g., cross appointments and partnerships) with research and clinical institutes such as the Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute, the Institute for Reconstructive Sciences in Medicine and the Institute for Stuttering Treatment and the Institute for Stuttering Treatment and Research.
