The Clinical Extern Program is an exciting opportunity available to actively enrolled students in a variety of programs to enhance their skills in a hands on setting.

Clinical Student Externs will be working in the capacity of an unregulated health care provider who provides basic clinical care to clients and their families.

The Clinical Extern works in collaboration with an interdisciplinary healthcare team under the supervision of an appointed regulated healthcare professional.


Qualifications:


Education/Experience:


  • Nursing Students in any year of study and enrolled in a CNO approved baccalaureate or diploma nursing program, or
  • Students enrolled in an accredited Occupational Therapy, or
  • Students enrolled in an accredited Physiotherapy program, or
  • Students enrolled in the 2nd year of the Paramedic program, or
  • Students enrolled in the 2nd or 3rd years of the Respiratory Therapy Program, or
  • Internationally Educated Nurses (IEN) who have initiated registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), have received a CNO letter of direction and meet one of the following:
  • Are in any year of study in a CNO approved program, such as BScN-IEN program, PN-IEN program, or _
- _Are completing a micro-credential plan with a curriculum to meet the CNO requirements for registration, or _
- _Have completed their educational requirements and are waiting to write their registration exam. _

  • Students who have successfully completed a recent clinical placement preferred

Skills/Abilities:


  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills as well as creativity, critical thinking and problemsolving abilities relative to the situation and scope of practice
  • Demonstrated knowledge of infection prevention and control practices
  • Demonstrated commitment to client centered care
  • Demonstrated decision making, organizational and timemanagement skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team and also independently, with mínimal supervision
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player
  • Current certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Demonstrated regular attendance at work

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must undergo a successful Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC)
