Job Summary
- The department of Chemistry provides excellent undergraduate programs, as well as advanced instruction at the graduate and research levels. Reporting to the Departmental Administrator, the Scientific Glassblower is responsible for the operation of the Glassblowing Shop in the Department of Chemistry.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, construct, modify and repair apparatus and equipment used for teaching and research purposes. Review and analyze glass engineering and research data to meet research objectives.
- Interpret scientific drawings and oral/written proposals in order to produce required apparatus.
- Maintain inventory and billing records. Monitor projects to meet completion dates, order glass, oxygen and hydrogen supplies. Develop an estimate on costs for each project undertaken and invoice for the work done.
- Maintain shop equipment, update operating manuals, calibrate and monitor high volume systems and annealing ovens.
- Establish and ensure adherence to safety standards in the workshop.
Note
Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.

Required Qualifications
- Completion of a recognized course of study in scientific glassblowing, plus a minimum of five years' related experience in a professional setting (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).
- Demonstrated understanding of glass blowing procedures, processes, and materials (especially the various types of glass such as borosilicate, quartz, lead, etc.).
- Demonstrated proficiency in hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity.
- Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal and organizational skills are essential.
- Must be able to work independently with mínimal direct supervision.
