Wood is a leading provider of engineering services to the global pulp and paper industry. We see good long term opportunities in this market sector and are actively growing our Forest Industries team.

We are currently seeking a Department Manager - Electrical, Instrumentation & Controls (EIC) to join our Forest Industries team in Vancouver, Canada.


The EIC Manager has overall responsibility for building and developing the EIC engineering and design team, managing our library of technical standards and procedures, and the continued migration of our engineering platforms to full data-centric delivery.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, motivate, coach, and manage an engineering team consisting of engineers and designers within the EIC disciplines
  • Ensure that EIC engineering delivery meets budget, timing, and quality requirements
  • Ensure that projects and work assigned to your team are executed in accordance with our quality system and company procedures
  • Ensure effective communications and coordination between all supervised staff, project managers, and lead engineers of other departments, to ensure efficient sharing and utilization of information and resources
  • Monitor and report on overall productivity and efficiency of the EIC engineering team, forecast trends and provide estimates to complete for EIC project scopes
  • Coordinate with the engineering manager and other discipline managers to anticipate and resolve potential problems/risks meeting project objectives
  • Take a role as principal engineer of the department and mentor less experienced colleagues wherever required
  • Identify and implement training and professional development needs for the EIC team
  • Provide forecasting and staffing plans based on workloads and progress, and assign staff to specific projects or proposals
  • Identify staffing requirements and lead the process to recruit new staff as required
  • Lead / supervise / review technical studies completed by the EIC team
  • Review RFQ documents and lead / supervise the preparation of labourhour estimates for the EIC discipline scopes
  • Lead / supervise the preparation of labourhours, supporting documentation and justifications for change orders when required
  • Review and approve engineering estimates prior to submission for capital cost estimating
  • Stay current with project standards, industry trends, professional guidelines, and new techniques / tools / practices, and roll these out to the EIC team as applicable

Skills / Qualifications:

  • Qualified Electrical/Controls Engineer holding a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Eligible for registration as a P.Eng. in British Columbia.
  • Registration as a PE in the United States is a definite asset.
  • At least 1015 years of relevant technical experience in designing Electrical and/or Automation projects for industrial environments
  • Thorough knowledge of industry practices, codes and standards applicable to electrical / instrumentation / controls engineering
  • High proficiency in both written and spoken English
  • Familiar with the creation of tender documents
  • Hands on experience in industry software, such as eTAP, Easypower, Aveva Electrical/Instrumentation, Smartplant Electrical/Instrumentation, 3D Model Review Tools (Navis Works), MS Office Suite, etc.
  • Experience in reviewing key deliverables prepared by EIC team or by other workshare offices
  • Good communication skills and a team player
  • Flexible and committed to meeting our client expectations
  • Has clearly demonstrated strong engineering competence, interpersonal / team building & leadership skills
