MUST be available to work overnights and weekends, and commit to at least one shift per week, can work up to 48 hours per week

Wage: $19 per hour, with a $2 per hour shift premium paid for hours worked between 11 pm and 7 am

Descriptions of Duties and Responsibilities:

As a casual Relief Work you are front-line workers, working as part of a team, interacting directly with our clients in our shelter and detox programs, the majority of which are homeless and under the influence of substances.
The primary responsibility is to ensure that client's needs are assessed and met appropriately, while clients are visiting our shelter.
The following duties are performed by the Addiction Support Worker:

  • Completes admissions and discharges of individuals experiencing substance influence.
  • Treats clients with respect and dignity, interacting with them in a caring, nonjudgmental manner
  • Monitors clients' safety and wellbeing, ensuring their withdrawal symptoms are being monitored appropriately, and getting support when needed
  • Attends to crisis situations, focusing on defusing situations before they escalate
  • Interacts with other addiction agencies and community services including CPS & EMS
  • Following established protocols, required to ensure bodily fluids are properly cleaned up and area is disinfected.
  • Provides clients with information regarding treatment options, and makes referrals as required

Position Requirements:

  • Completion or in progress, of a diploma or degree, in a related field, from a post secondary institution, Preference will be given those in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Nursing, addictions or related fields

  • Proof of vaccination
  • Current Vulnerable Sector Check (within the last 6 months)
  • FOIP training (training link can be provided prior to orientation )
  • Lift Training (training link can be provided prior to orientation)
  • Understanding and awareness of the Protection of Persons in Care Act (document can be shared prior to orientation)

Qualifications:

  • Must be able to work over nights (working other shifts is possible) a minimum of three to four shifts per month, (but can work up to 44 hours a week)
  • An open, accepting, compassionate attitude, and a belief that all humans are equal
  • Must have strong crisis management, problem solving and multi tasking abilities
  • Comfortable working in an environment with the risk of exposure to bodily fluids, aggression and individuals that are mentally unstable
  • Experience with individuals who have substance issues and or are homeless would be an asset
