Position Information:


Psychiatry at the General is a 50 bed academic mental health unit with six beds specifically funded for the provision of specialized services for the treatment of eating disorders.

The unit offers crisis intervention and stabilization. It is staffed with registered nurses, orderlies, clerical staff, social workers and occupational therapists.

The volume of patients admitted to the inpatient units is approximately patients per month. The majority of patients are admitted through Psychiatric Emergency Services. Approximately 85% of patients are admitted on an involuntary basis.

The average length of stay is 11-13 days, although there are patients with complex needs that require a longer length of stay.

The occupancy rate is high and the manager is instrumental in managing patient flow.


Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) is a specialized service for assessing individuals deemed to be suffering from a psychiatric illness and who are in crisis.

PES is located in the Emergency Department at the Civic campus.

Patients who present to the Emergency Department for a mental health concern are sent to PES according to a collaborative algorithm.

This position is temporary until approximately December 31, 2024.


Rotation/Shifts:

Days, 8 hour shifts.


What you will bring:


  • Baccalaureate Degree in a regulated Health Profession, Health Administration or a related field;
  • Minimum of 5 years of healthcare experience in diverse positions in an acute care hospital setting;
  • Three years in healthcare leadership;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of patient safety & quality improvement processes;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of staff safety processes;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop budgets & manage fiscal resources;
  • Excellent skills in oral and written communication;
  • Demonstrated experience in patient relations and dealing with patients' families or advocates;
  • Knowledge of statistics and ability to analyze fiscal and patient care data;
  • Excellent knowledge of principles of management and evidenced based practice;
  • Knowledge of health care disciplines in Clinical Services and their role in patient care;
  • Knowledge and ability to enhance continuum of care;
  • Proven ability in working effectively with all members of health care team;
  • Demonstrated ability to model appropriate conduct & behaviour and to be an effective change agent;
  • Ability to respond to large numbers of simultaneous demands from patients, families, staff, physicians, Material Management, Human Resources, etc;
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada.

You will stand out with:


  • Master's degree in administration or Nursing;
  • Experience developing and working in partnerships with community partners.
  • Demonstrated thorough working knowledge of current theories, research and evidencebased practice standards in Mental Health;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Mental Health Act and related legislation affecting patients/clients and employees;
  • Proficiency in English and French oral expression (advanced level and comprehension (advanced level).
