Department and Position Summary
UHN's Perfusion Services supports Toronto's biggest and busiest suite of ORs, conducting 1750 cardiac surgeries each year.

The Perfusion Department is also actively involved in the Transplant (Heart, Lungs & Liver), Organ Regeneration, ECLS and Ventricular Assist Device Programs.

Our suite of ORs incorporates state-of-the-art-technology to assist the surgical teams in handling the most complex cases. Perfusionists work in an environment where creativity and innovative case management are encouraged.

As a Cardiovascular Perfusionist at Toronto General Hospital, you will be able to use a variety of skills on a regular basis, not just once or twice a year, within an environment that encompasses:

The largest Lung Transplant program in North America and the developers of the Ex-Vivo Lung recondition program.

The largest Canadian Adult ECMO program, using both diffusion oxygenators and the Novalung; Perfusion is a vital part of the ECMO program, attending and influencing daily rounds and improving patient outcomes Implanting a variety of ventricular assist devices, including Heart-Mate II and Heartware.

A busy adult congenital program, proving experience in challenging and innovative surgery Opportunity to participate in original research, write papers and present at Regional, National and International conferences.

Educational support that allows for annual attendance at a wide variety of conferences. Opportunities to be actively involved in Cardiac Surgery Resident training as well as Perfusion student training.

Qualifications

  • At minimum, completion of a Bachelors of Science degree with a diploma in Cardiovascular Perfusion
  • Certification (or eligibility of certification) with the Canadian Society of Clinical Perfusion (CSCP)/or American Board of Clinical Perfusion (ABCP)
  • Demonstrated interest in continuing education
  • Thorough knowledge of the theory and practice procedures, instruments, equipment and special techniques
  • Specialized knowledge of extracorporeal physiology and mechanics (both adult and pediatric) required
  • Knowledge of applicable Hospital and departmental policies, procedures, guidelines, protocols and practices
  • Excellent judgement, problem recognition, and problem solvingskills
  • Effective time management skills with the ability to organize work and set priorities for self and others
  • Highly developed expertise and effective communication with all other health team members are essential in making the frequent, critical decisions required during the course of a bypass or other related perfusion procedures
  • Ability to work both effectively and accurately, adapting under stressful conditions
  • Ability to work effectively in a fastpaced team environment
  • Computer literacy
