The Calgary Drop-In Centre (the DI) is more than an emergency shelter. We provide health services and housing programs to people who need support. Position Summary


Reporting to the Medical Director, the Withdrawal Management Physician is responsible for the medical management of withdrawal secondary to substance use, including but not limited to alcohol, opioids, stimulants, and sedatives.


The Withdrawal Management Physician works closely with a multidisciplinary team consisting of nurses, social workers, support workers and addictions counsellors.


Time Commitment
This position has a flexible schedule to accommodate fluctuations in admissions, ranging from 4-14 hours per week. Scheduled weekday mornings are on site, up to 4 hours with on-call expectations for the remainder of scheduled day.


Job Duties

  • Admission history and physical exams
  • Prescribing of medication for the management of withdrawal, including controlled medications
  • Daily rounds when on site
  • Availability to nursing and pharmacy teams for support while off site
  • Referral assistance to emergency services as required
  • Episodic medical care within the scope of general practice as per patient needs, including wound assessments and STBBI screening

Required Competencies

  • Must be Licensed with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, and Certified with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP)
  • Experienced in medical detox/withdrawal management
  • Experience with opioid agonist therapy (OAT) management including sublingual buprenorphine, longacting subcutaneous buprenorphine, methadone and slow release morphine
  • Methadone prescribing exemption within Alberta
  • Experience working in distress and/or high stress situations
  • Work experience in the community with high risk and vulnerable populations preferred
