Your Opportunity:


As a Laboratory Assistant I, you are part of a public health laboratory team responsible for performing routine and specialized specimen processing while adhering to laboratory standard operating procedures and laboratory accreditation requirements.

You will plan and organize your work responsibilities to receive specimens, perform pre-analytical specimen processing, and distribute specimens for laboratory testing and investigation.


Specific accountabilities include:

operation of technical equipment, performing quality control procedures, performing equipment maintenance, preparing specimens for storage and transport, assisting with the training of staff and students as required, and providing customer service support.

You will use your knowledge and demonstrated understanding of quality systems to participate in quality control functions and quality improvement activities.

You ensure work processes are carried out with patient and staff safety as a priority. You may be required to train to perform Laboratory Assistant I functions in other areas of the lab.

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner.

You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.

Equivalent is defined as completion of a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) and Combined Laboratory and Xray Technologist (CLXT) program in Canada; completion of a Medical Lab Technician/Technologist program outside of Canada; and MLT and CLXT students who have completed their phlebotomy training/rotation.

Applicants with a high school diploma may be considered.

If hired, you will be required to complete on-the-job phlebotomy training provided by APL at no cost, and formal training courses offered by SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) or NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology).

The costs associated with these formal training courses will be your responsibility.

You will be required to complete these training requirements within your probationary period, as per the Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA) collective agreement.


Additional Required Qualifications:

Graduate from a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent, which includes specimen handling. One-year Beaker CP Lab Processor experience. One-year public health lab experience. A combination of related education and experience may be considered. Basic computer knowledge including Microsoft Office. Knowledge of WHMIS and SDS. Manual dexterity for manipulation of specimens. Must be able to give and follow verbal and written direction in English.
