Who we need


The
Director, Valuation will be accountable to perform actuarial valuation, capital calculations, and related financial reporting for Securian Canada's insurance lines of business (there are currently two Director roles and valuation teams for two distinct blocks of business).


  • Using considerable judgement and insurance industry experience in the assessment of financials, the Director, Valuation calculates actuarial reserves and submits opinions relating to actuarial liabilities and capital positions.
  • The Director supports the preparation of actuarial models, assumptions, experience studies, etc., to provide accurate and timely reporting to management and the Board, working in close partnership with the Actuarial and Finance teams.
  • The Director, Valuation will also contribute to the maintenance and enhancement of financial forecasting through ownership of methods, models, and processes.
What you will do

  • Perform detailed IFRS17, LICAT, USGAAP and other valuation work for assigned business, ensuring appropriate documentation, and assists in identifying changing requirements, assumptions, and appropriate change management;
  • Develop unbiased projections for financial planning and analysis, and assists with communication of financial analytics and results;
  • Lead the development of actuarial models to perform liability valuation and various projections for financial planning, capital, Financial Condition Testing, the Appointed Actuary's Report, etc.;
  • Support actuarial assumptions setting, including experience studies and analysis;
  • Serve as a liaison with other accounting and actuarial staff, as well as pricing, administration and IT professionals;
  • Provide oversight and direction to more junior actuarial associates in the department, mentoring associates, and fostering a positive and engaging work environment;
  • Set direction for direct and indirect reports by providing relevant information and establishing goals;
  • Perform other valuation work and support adhoc projects as needed.
What you will bring


The education. Qualified actuary with a professional designation (i.e., Fellow) from the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, Society of Actuaries, or equivalent.

The experience. Minimum 8 years of relevant experience in the insurance industry, including some in valuation, modeling, financial analysis, reporting, etc., and some experience supervising actuarial staff. Excellent knowledge and experience related to relevant actuarial and accounting standards of practice from the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and the IASB (e.g., IFRS 17). Extensive experience in the Moody's AXISTM actuarial system and Risk IntegrityTM for the IFRS 17 platform.

The knowledge & the skills. In depth knowledge of Life Insurance products. Strong technical and analytical skills, including experience using quantitative risk models. Good communications skills and ability to communicate technical content clearly to various audiences. Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities. Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills.

The drive. Work well under pressure and within time constraints to effectively accomplish individual and team objectives. Ability to recruit change management allies throughout an organization. Highly self-motivated with strong accountability. Strong sense of urgency and commitment to meet business deadlines.
