The Department of Renewable Resources is among the best both nationally and internationally in terms of quality of research and training much needed for the next generation of scientists and workforce to address the grand challenges for the environmental sciences, forest ecology and management, sustainable agriculture, reclamation and restoration of land and water, and soil sciences in the province and beyond.

Position


This person is expected to coordinate the preparation and delivery of teaching labs with large number of students and field trips for the department's larger undergraduate laboratory courses, organizing of the department's field schools during summer, oversees departmental shared research labs, and is a member of the ALES Safety Committee.

This position requires the incumbent to work in-person in order to fully students and the department.


Specifically, they (1) take the lead role in overseeing all (non-computer) departmental teaching and shared laboratory facilities and associated equipment to provide clean, safe, and effective working environments; (2) coordinate and oversee the maintenance, storage, security and provision of teaching samples, lab supplies, chemicals, glassware, equipment, and safety items; (3) are a member of the ALES safety committee and works closely with the ALES Safety Advisor; (4) provide a one-window approach for all instructors for course-related field trip equipment needs; (5) organize departmental field schools; (6) provide support for on-line teaching and learning; and (7) perform basic department administrative duties as required.


Duties
Department Teaching and Shared Laboratories

  • Takes the lead role in overseeing the maintenance of all departmental teaching and shared laboratory facilities (other than computerbased laboratories) and equipment to provide clean, safe, and effective working environments.
  • Maintains an inventory of departmental field and laboratory equipment.
  • Coordinates the maintenance and replacement of laboratory/field equipment; assists with appropriate capital equipment proposals.
  • Coordinates and maintains all centrallyadministered labrelated storage areas, to achieve efficient, safe, and appropriate space use
Departmental Laboratory Safety

  • Member of the ALES Safety Committee
  • Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) for chemicals, radioactive substances, biohazards, fire safety and general safety) for teaching and department shared labs.
  • Proactively assesses potential hazards; identifies, rectifies, and/or advises on safetyrelated lab issues; recommends policies and purchases for teaching and department shared labs
  • Ensures that appropriate laboratory emergency action
