Position Summary
The Health and Safety Coordinator is responsible for the promotion of worker safety and well-being.

On a day-to-day basis the Health and Safety Coordinator will perform risk and safety assessments, monitor hazards, conduct training, and administer the various requirements of Taggart's safety program.

These duties must be carried out in a manner that is in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, and the Taggart Construction Limited, Health and Safety policy.

The performance of the duties must ensure a quality approach to all employees, customers, subcontractors, managers, and suppliers.

All responsibilities must be performed in a manner that is consistent with TCL's vision, mission, and must comply with all company policies and procedures.


Major Responsibilities:


  • Ensure a safe work environment for all stakeholders, including, but not limited to our employees, managers, contractors, and inspectors.
  • Conduct employee onboarding safety orientations with all new and returning employees.
  • Follow up with new employees to ensure they are comfortable and working safely in their new roles.
  • Support the ongoing process of the Certificate of Recognition Program (COR).
  • Act as a liaison between Taggart and governing bodies regulating health and safety as well as employers.
  • Responsible for the submission of all required Notices (as per the OHSA and O. Reg. 213/91) to MOL and WSIB.
  • Direct and review the analysis of accident and injury data, identifying the needs for new or modified occupational safety programs.
  • Ensure that safety meetings are held on a regular schedule. Hold workers and supervisors accountable to safe working practices.
  • Organize and participate within JHSC's as required and host Health and Safety Meetings as scheduled by Taggart Senior management and legislated requirements.
  • Assist and support in the development and implementation of corporate policies and procedures, in accordance with all relevant legislation in conjunction with the work being performed.
  • Ensuring safety obligations with clients are carried out as per the terms of the agreement and communicated to the Project Manager and Superintendents.
  • In cooperation with the Supervisor, perform accident investigations and report all findings including preventative actions to the Project Manager and/or Superintendent in a timely manner. Prepare all necessary documentation that is required following an injury.
  • Maintain awareness of amendments to the Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) and Regulations and make recommendations for their implementation.
  • Perform job site safety compliance inspections including hazard analysis, safe work procedures, written reports, and recommendations.
  • Visit site regularly to provide guidance on safe work practices, acting as a coach/mentor champion the Taggart safety culture.
  • Promote and reward safe operating practices and encourage those that are passionate about safety.
  • Create or update existing/ new Safe Work and Safe Job procedures.
  • Maintain record of training completion; lead training sessions as required due to changing work environments or specific tasks.
  • Maintain record of training completion and upcoming requirements. Keep Human Resources Data base current with training requirements.
  • Provide Health and Safety leadership, guidance, and support at all times.
  • Perform additional assignments per manager's direction.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Postsecondary education in Occupational Health and Safety or related field.
  • Safety certification training (e.g., CRSP, GSC, NCSO) is considered a strong asset.
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in a Health and Safety Role in a construction setting.
  • Must remain current in the field by attending training and workshops.
  • Awareness of trends, regulations, OH&S law, and best practices in the field is essential.
  • Attention to detail essential to reporting requirements.
