Academic Advisor:


Primary Purpose:
To serve as a student academic advisor to prospective and current undergraduate students in the College of Kinesiology.

The primary goal of this position is to support student success and enhance student experience through all stages of the student lifecycle.


Typical Duties or Accountabilities:

Provide academic advising for students currently in or transferring to the College of Kinesiology. This includes the interpretation of policies and regulations, accurate communication and maintenance of all academic and College of Kinesiology program regulations and requirements, as well as informing students of academic policies and degree requirements within the College of Kinesiology.

  • Practice culturally relevant advising by working and responding in a manner that acknowledges and respects individuals' cultural beliefs, attitudes, behaviours, customs, and characteristics of the student.
  • Provide information to prospective applicants regarding academic requirements, admissions, and registration.
  • Understand and abide by confidentiality practices.
  • Ensure all policies and procedures are adhered to including those for registration and admissions through to convocation.
  • Present student concerns related to wellbeing to the Student Support Coordinator.
  • Triage mental healthrelated concerns to the appropriate supports including the Student Support Coordinator and Student Wellness Centre.
  • Effectively identify, adopt, implement, and monitor student experience in relation to academic advising services and supports, serving as a valueadded resource to students, providing consultation services in support of the achievement of students' goals.
  • Ensure accurate implementation of university and college policies and procedures.
  • Maintain direct contact with students, supporting students as they resolve student issues that occur in and out of the classroom environment, providing available resources, and working with students experiencing academic difficulty, developing student action (success) plans.
  • Represent the college at career days and other university and college student recruitment events, as required (e.g., UStart, Orientation, Open House).
  • Communicate with students related to prerequisites, course scheduling, course selection, career pathways, and graduation requirements.
  • This position works closely with the Associate Dean Academic, the Manager, Undergraduate Student Academic Services, the Student Support Coordinator, and Administrative Support.
  • Provide coverage for the Manager, Undergraduate Student Academic Services when required.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Education:
An undergraduate degree.


Experience:

***Required:

  • Minimum of 2 years of related experience with university support services and/or university academic advising.
  • Thorough understanding of university policy related to undergraduate students.
  • Working knowledge of the university Student Information System (Banner Student), including Advisor Services and Degree Works.
  • Preferred/desirable/considered an asset:
  • Experience and knowledge of adoption of online file management systems, such as Banner Document Management, would be considered an asset, as would familiarity with processes related to class overrides and permissions.
  • An interest in supporting student academic accommodation requests would also be desirable.
  • Experience with a full academic yearly cycle is considered an asset.

Salary:
The salary range, based on 1.0 FTE, is $49, ,033.00 per annum. The starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
