The Role

Assists to manage the operation, maintenance, and security of transit terminals, stations, bus stops (approximately 2700), garages, and operation centres.

Manages administrative support for the Section.
Duties/Responsibilities

  • Supervises Coordinators of On-Street Passenger Amenities, Administrative Assistants (Transit Maintenance), and students.
  • Works with the insurance pool and lawyers for claims related to properties (e.g., bus stops, terminals, stations).
  • Manages contracts for intercity bus companies operating from Regional properties. Communicates construction, systems, and operational issues to same.
  • Manages contractors for garbage collection; winter maintenance; installation and maintenance of shelters and benches; notice installations at bus stops, stations, and terminals; vending machines; and maintenance of the Sportsworld Crossing Station (owned by the Ministry and Metrolinx).
  • Manages uniform ordering and distribution for the Section.
  • Works with Facilities to maintain transit facilities, including construction, projects, and daily maintenance.
  • Manages creation and closing of facilities management system work order process.
  • Manages detours for transit services, including creation of detours, communication to staff and the public, and representing the Section on road construction project teams.
  • Responds to inquiries and resolves complaints related to bus stops, stations, terminals, and detour routing. Coordinates with Fleet to resolve vehiclerelated complaints.
  • Creates and implements staffing, vacation, and sign up schedules for 24/7 operations in the Section, and assigns work on statutory holidays.
  • Prepares and administers an operating budget. Recommends capital expenditures to the Manager.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of transit operations, intercity bus operations, contract management/administration, and administrative policies and procedures, normally acquired through some postsecondary education plus progressively responsible related experience.
  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with policies, procedures, collective agreements, and related legislation (e.g., health and safety).
  • Leadership and human relations skills to supervise, train, develop, motivate, and support staff; administer contracts with contractors; resolve and deescalate customer complaints; and participate as an effective team member.
  • Ability to write documents, specifications, reports, and recommendations for new technology and equipment, policies, and procedures. Ability to read and understand reports, procedures, manuals, and documents related to operations.
  • Computer skills with ability to use software such as Microsoft Office and databases.
  • Ability to travel within Waterloo Region.
  • Ability to support and demonstrate the Region's values.
