We are seeking a keen, driven cybersecurity professional to lead the development of a Security Operations Centre (SOC). You will be responsible for developing and piloting the SOC, and seeing it succeed in production. You will have the opportunity to build your team and lead them through the day-to-day operations of the SOC.


In addition to the day-to-day operations, you will also work closely with our members, our partners in the National Research and Education Network (NREN) on Canada-wide security initiatives, and collaborate with the Global Research and Education Network (GREN).

We will ask you to:

  • Help bring to life and manage a newly forming SOC.
  • Lead the daytoday operations of the SOC, including the associated platforms.
  • Define, implement, and optimise SOC procedures in line with Cybera and member requirements.
  • Ensure detected events are responded to in accordance with the established processes and within the identified SLAs.
  • Oversee, review, and support SOC analyst activities for threat identification, triage and escalation.
  • Coordinate the SOC team scheduling, including shift rosters, oncall, annual leave etc.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and mentoring to the SOC team, including defining and supporting training requirements.
  • Build and maintain relationships with our postsecondary and K12 security leads, national and global peers, as well as supporting vendors.
  • Establish data collection, analysis, monitoring and resolution metrics for SOC activity reporting.
  • Be available oncall to support critical security incidents.
  • Work in a hybrid home/office environment.
  • Navigate and manage a fastpaced, dynamic working environment.

Your professional tool-kit should include:

  • 510 years' experience in security operations, incident response, threat hunting roles and/or information security forensic roles.
  • Leadership and management experience with teams working in a hybrid home/office environment.
  • Strong verbal and written English communication skills.
  • The ability to understand complex cybersecurity topics and be able to communicate and present them at a higher level.
  • The ability to handle sensitive situations with discretion and confidentiality.
  • Handson experience in security tools and technologies, specifically SIEM tools (e.g. Sentinel). Engineering knowledge in these tools and technologies would be advantageous.
  • Awareness of current trends in cybersecurity, including knowledge of tactics for different types of threat actors.
  • Knowledge of IT security frameworks, such as NIST CSF and CIS.
  • A DevOps or Agile development mentality.

Compensation and Location:

This position is based in either our Calgary or Edmonton office. Salary will be commensurate with experience. No relocation costs will be awarded.
