Primary Objective of the Position:


The Category Manager will be a part of the Strategic Sourcing and Procurement Team at Cargojet and will be responsible for delivering strong results that support the company's strategies while providing significant value to the internal business units.

This position will work to drive close collaboration, manage vendor relationships and their performance, and pursue value-creation opportunities through a strategic approach towards category management and sourcing best practices.

In executing these responsibilities, the Category Manager will develop and meet strategic goals related to spend management, growth, compliance, cost savings, quality of service and risk management.


Essential Position Functions:


  • Responsible for full category assessment that includes a review of contract expirations, benchmarking, and market analysis, contributing to the execution of the company's longterm plan
  • Responsible for owning category expertise in freight and transportation by implementing a longerterm perspective while highlighting opportunities and risks in this area of Spend without jeopardizing quality or business continuity
  • Support and assist with the development of documents for prequalification, tendering, and proposals
  • Direct and supervise the scheduling of inbound/outbound shipments to ensure most economical utilization of carriers based on service parameters; interface with operations and to resolve any problems associated with scheduling and dispatching
  • Provide expertise and recommend programs that improve the ground transportation and freight management function; and could include regulatory and documentation concerns
  • Manage defined existing carriers contractual SLAs, monitor carrier performance, and review current practice versus potential improvements by changing carrier mode or mix
  • Develop and implement a proactive track and trace process to ensure all shipments are delivered in a timely manner
  • Source new freight companies and receive quotes for rate comparisons ensuring the most competitive prices and terms are negotiated and reached
  • Manages carrier score cards proactively to maximize efficiencies and optimize costs
  • Organize special adhoc shipment costs effectively by collecting bids from various carriers to get the best price at the highest service level
  • Ensure compliance to all regulatory issues within the scope of service
  • Coordinate and/or provide ongoing training, education, and recommendations to internal Stakeholders on needs identification, effective specifications development, evaluation criteria, liability, and risk for bid document formulation.
  • Oversee the sourcing events with 3rd party partners ensuring a transparent and objective process.
  • Evaluate analyses of sourcing results from a total cost of ownership perspective, and provide recommendations for optimization and continuous improvement
  • Lead crossfunctional team to negotiate valuebased agreements with vendor partners.
  • Assist in the preparation of formal negotiation strategies and related documentation and participate in negotiations for large dollar value, high customer impact and multiyear contracts
  • Compliance management to ensure the use of preferred and approved suppliers, improved working capital, and maximized savings are obtained
  • Management of supplier's contractual commitments performance to maximize savings and minimize risk
  • Research best practices and make recommendations for strategic sourcing related processes, policies, and procedures
  • Create, manage and audit contracts by partnering with Legal and other internal stakeholders
  • Responsible to ensure that fair and ethical sourcing process is followed along with all applicable corporate policies and procedures
  • Maintain a high standard of integrity and professionalism in all business communications and relationships, both inside and outside the organization.
  • Bachelor's degree in supply chain management, transportation, logistics, finance, business administration, or related field
  • Accreditation such as SCMP, P.Log, CCLP or industry equivalent is preferred
  • 57 years of postuniversity work
