The Public Guardian and Trustee (PGT) is here to help citizens who may be incapable, are under the age of 19 or who are deceased.

The Public Guardian and Trustee (PGT) has the mandate to:

  • Protect the legal and financial interests of children under the age of 19 years
  • Protect the legal, financial, personal and health care interests of adults who need help with decisionmaking
  • Administer estates of deceased persons and missing persons


The PGT is a corporation sole which is a legal structure with one person responsible for overall service delivery instead of a board of directors.

That person is called the Public Guardian and Trustee. The PGT is independent of government when making decisions on behalf of clients. The
Services to Adults Division delivers a wide range of individualized services to or on behalf of vulnerable adults who require assistance in managing, protecting, and making decisions about their personal, financial or legal affairs.

Vulnerable adults may require assistance by reason of mental illness, developmental disability, traumatic brain injury or degenerative conditions affecting brain functions (e.


g:
dementia).

The Legal Assistant provides administrative support services to in-house counsel in the Services to Adults Division. In addition, these positions work closely with other support staff in their Divisions to ensure seamless services to clients.


Job Requirements:


  • Grade 12 graduation or equivalent.
  • One year of experience working in a legal office.

Preference may be given to applicants with:

  • Completion or partial completion of a recognized legal assistant program.

About this Position:


The Public Guardian and Trustee (PGT) offers the ability for a modified work week schedule which allows employees to have an earned day off every two weeks, should they choose the modified schedule.

Flexible work options are available after training. This position may be able to work from home a few days a week as per the Telework Agreement.

An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies in similar positions.

The position provides administrative support services to in-house counsel in the Services to Adults Division. In addition, these positions work closely with other support staff in their Divisions to ensure seamless services to clients. The legal assistant reports to the Administrative Team Leaders in Services to Adults for administrative matters. Work is assigned by their supervisor and/or in-house counsel.
