Nikihk Indigenous Housing First is an intense home visitation and follow-up program designed to assist those experiencing chronic homelessness. We provide in-home follow-up support, with cultural and spiritual support and education.

The Indigenous Cultural & Spiritual Educator supports families in areas of spiritual guidance, traditional healing and emotional support within the Indigenous culture.


Responsibilities:


  • The Indigenous Cultural & Spiritual Educator shall assist clients towards opportunities to further develop an understanding of traditional Aboriginal spirituality while exposing them to traditional ceremonies and belief systems.
  • Conduct spiritual services and various traditional ceremonies either ingroups or individually such as smudging using sacred medicines, (e.g., sweetgrass, tobacco, sage, cedar), fasts, family spiritual services, sweat lodges, healing circles, longhouse ceremonies.
  • Conduct workshops for clients and community agencies/partners regarding traditional and cultural beliefs using visual aids and other media.
  • Provide teachings to the client and or community regarding the areas of Aboriginal spirituality and culture that will enhance the understanding of traditional beliefs and values.
  • Arranging and preparing for various tribal group Aboriginal Elders to attend the workshops or group discussion as needed.
  • Providing counseling to clients in emergency situations such as a death in the family or other crisis situations.
  • Liaising with both Team Leader and programs staff to assist with client case management strategies, client progress and graduation planning.
  • On a monthly basis, ensure all information is being documented in the ETO database, attend team meetings and attend supervision.
  • Attend appointments, meetings with clients for the purpose of providing support, mediation, or interpretation/clarification.
  • All staff are to be cross trained in Nikihk Housing 1st positions for the purpose of cover off as needed and requested by the Team Leader.
  • Other services as requested by the Project Team Leader.
Qualification Requirements

  • A. Native Studies Degree or equivalent; or 5 years minimum of relevant experience.
  • Must have the ability to empathize with those experiencing significant barriers in their lives.
  • A significant understanding of the issues of poverty is essential.
  • Must have an understanding of the impact the loss of culture identity and intergeneration residential school syndrome has had on Aboriginal people.
  • Must have own vehicle and be willing to transport clients.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and willing to obtain a drivers abstract.
  • Must have 2milliondollar liability insurance coverage.
  • Must provide a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector and Intervention Record Check (within a 6month period from date of completion).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Salary and Benefits

  • Salary plus monthly auto allowance.
  • Paid sick and wellness days after 3 months' probation (prorated)
  • Extended Health Benefit (50/50 cost sharing) after 6 months' employment.
  • Working approximately 34.5 hours per week
