The Clinical Lab Assistant will support an environment of quality service reflective of the Mission, Role, Vision, and Values of Kingston Health Sciences Centre, which enables the Clinical Laboratory Services Team to be "committed to our communities, and to be the most highly valued and respected academic health center".

Within this role the employee is accountable for contributing to the delivery of the Kingston Health Sciences Centre strategy.

As an employee, one must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for actively promoting and supporting patient and family centered engagement and care in all we do.

The Laboratory Assistant performs laboratory specimen preparation and standardized analysis as required. Duties listed do not require interpretation, assessment or the exercise of independent judgement.


PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:


  • Receives, correlates, accessions and distributes specimen received within the various laboratories.
  • Ensures specimens are prepared for testing.
  • Using standardized procedures and under the supervision of a ML T will perform analyses where appropriate and required.
  • Ensures work is quality checked by an authorized individual
  • Prepares equipment and materials necessary for MLT analysis
  • Under the direction of the MLT, assists with preparation of specimens for analysis as defined by standardized procedures.
  • Files, archives, retrieves and sends out tissue blocks and slides.
  • Ensures all required materials in the lab are available at all times; includes stocking and reordering.
  • The Employee will adhere to the worker responsibilities as set out in the Occupational Health & Safety Act, hospital safety policies, and dept/unit established procedures at all times. Where possible, take corrective action to address a hazard, otherwise report the unresolved hazard, dangerous circumstance, unsafe situation to self, other coworkers or the community, to their supervisor. Should the employee suffer a workplace injury or illness, he/she will advise their supervisor; actively participate in identifying and resolving the underlying cause(s), and participates in early and safe return to work as per Workplace Safety & Insurance Act.
  • Understands and is familiar with all pertinent KGH policies and procedures including those relating to workplace conduct. Complies with the KGH Commitment to uphold the Workplace Conduct and Reporting of Inappropriate Conduct policy and behaves in a manner that is consistent with the guiding principles and expectations

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Certification as Laboratory Assistant from CSMLS, OSMT or another agency recognized by the Laboratory Licensing Branch of the Ministry of Health of the Province of Ontario or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years experience preferred in a medical laboratory as a Lab Assistant or MLT within the last five years preferred.
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact tactfully with staff, physicians, other hospital staff and other clients
  • Ability to work harmoniously in a team environment
  • Proven ability to perform duties independently, with a high degree of motivation and mínimal supervision
  • Ability to attend work on a regular basis.
  • Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.
