Position Summary
Extern Clinical Mentor, Professional Practice

Your goal in this position is to support the education and development of the Nurse Externs, provide mentorship, support, team integration, Extern coordination, and overall program implementation and evaluation at the point of care.

To accomplish this, the Extern Clinical Mentor must take an active role by working closely with the externs to provide guidance, training, support, help define a strong career development plan, and serve as a role model for the trainee.

The Clinical Extern Mentor role is designed for a registered nursing professional (i.e., nurse practitioner/advanced practice nurse, registered nurse). You demonstrate leadership, change management and problem-solving skills. You have excellent organizational skills and can prioritize workload. You also have excellent communication skills and demonstrate conflict resolution skills. You have a good understanding of professional practice standards and CNO standards of practice.

This position supports the hospital's academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation.

This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, learners, volunteers and families.

On a practical level, you will

Support training and integration of Externs at the organizational and unit level by demonstrating a good understanding of the College of Nurses of Ontario

  • Professional Standards when working with Unregulated Healthcare Workers.


Support Nurse Extern's practice and integration into the clinical area in accordance with organizational and professional standards, and in collaboration with clinical teams.

Contribute to Extern onboarding and ongoing education and practice development within the boundaries of the extern role.

Create, adapt, and deliver orientation and learning resources, using various delivery methods in accordance with organizational and unit policies/practices/guidelines.


Provide an ongoing presence on the clinical unit(s) to support the ongoing education and development of the externs as well as tracking and documentation of skillset achievement.

Provide ongoing monitoring and evaluations of Extern role including the creation or learning goals and objectives. Development of action plans and identification or any barriers to learning.

Serve as a liaison and conduit between the unit leadership, Professional Practice and Operations.


Qualifications:

BScN required, master's in nursing or Education preferred

Regulated Healthcare Professional

Previous experience as Clinical Instructor or placement supervisor preferred

Minimum of 3 years of experience in teaching, working with learners or preceptoring

Minimum of 3 years acute care experience

Minimum of 2 years of front-line leadership experience
