Position:
Veterinary Technologist


Department:
Surgery


Reports to:
Head of Surgery Department/Veterinary Technician Supervisor


This position is responsible for coordinating and assisting during surgery consultations, dispensing medications, coordinating and performing hospital discharges of patients, and may include performing nursing duties such as blood collection and IV catheter placement.

This role requires a strong focus on client communication. Patient care and client communication is conducted under the direct supervision of the Surgical Specialist on the case.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • A thorough understanding of all procedures and protocols within the surgical service as well as the ability to use all equipment safely and effectively
  • Responsible for coordinating with the Surgery Supervisor during the admission process
  • Participates in doctor rounds and preliminary examination on inpatients
  • Assist the Surgeon during consultations with patient restraint, examination, and TPR's
  • May perform technical nursing skills such as: IV catheter placement, blood collection. Other nursing skills may include urine collection (cystocentesis, catheterization), taking radiographs, etc.
  • Calculates, dispenses, and administers medications at the direction of the attending Surgeon
  • Ensures that procedures are accurately documented on Smartflow patient treatment sheets
  • Responsible for coordinating with surgery and anesthesia veterinary technologists during the discharge process
  • Responsible for documenting all patient information while on shift and for ensuring that information is communicated with staff in Wards and ICU
  • As a member of the overall CWVS team, you may be required to assist in other areas of the hospital when your service should the need arise.
  • Performs other duties as required

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Strong desire to learn and excel within the profession
  • Ability to recognize and establish priorities within the surgery service
  • Excellent client communication skills
  • Demonstrated computer and phone skills
  • High level of professionalism
  • Has a strong knowledge and understanding of normal vital parameters, and the ability to recognize changes and/or abnormalities
  • Strong mathematics skills (drug dose calculations)
  • Ability to recognize and establish priorities and execute patient triage
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work with little or no supervision when necessary
  • Ability to work as part of a team

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Graduate of an accredited program for Veterinary Technologists (Technicians or Nurses)
  • Demonstrated skills, experience and training that would qualify the individual for a position of responsibility within the surgical service

$27.00-$36.00 per hour
