Assessment accommodation


Duties:

Extraction of lipids, DNA and RNA from plant seedlings.
Documentation of seedling growth by careful measurement of physical characteristics.
Analysis of plant lipid extracts as gas chromatography and thin layer chromatography.
Assessment of gene expression through techniques such as RT-PCR.
Basic molecular biology techniques for gene cloning.
Use of bioinformatics software for DNA sequence analysis and gene expression analysis.
Planning of scientific research activities.
Interpretation and presentation of data through written and verbal reports (Powerpoint).

Education:


Currently enrolled or will be enrolled by the date of appointment in a PhD program in a recognized post-secondary institution with a specialization in Food Science, Plant Science, or Biochemistry.

The student must meet the eligibility criteria to enroll at the University of Saskatchewan.

Degree equivalency


Experience:


Experience* in laboratory work related to plant lipid analysis, for example lipid extraction and the preparation of material for analysis by gas chromatography.

Experience* in DNA sequence analysis, for example by conducting homology searches using the NCBI database.

Experience* in molecular biology techniques including polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and cloning of DNA fragments into plasmid vectors.

Experience* in writing research reports and presenting data.

  • In the context of student recruitment in the Federal Public Service, the experience can be acquired through the studies, work experience, or volunteer activities.
