The Environmental Protection Officer (EPO) protects the environment by providing professional and technical advice to others on the implementation and administration of the Environmental Management Act to manage industrial, municipal, agricultural, point and non-point source wastes and hazardous materials.

This role leads assigned Environmental Protection projects and processes regarding various waste authorizations within the province.

Additionally, the EPO conducts source monitoring to assess impacts of toxins and wastes, and facilitates compliance, continuous improvement and effective management of waste discharges into the environment.


Job Requirements:


  • A Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Management, Applied Science or Natural Sciences and three (3) years of related experience; or,
  • A Diploma in Environmental Management, Applied Science or Natural Sciences and five (5) years of related experience.

Related experience must include each of the following:

  • Experience related to environmental protection and industrial and/or municipal waste management, such as:
  • Experience with reduction, recycling, treatment and disposal technologies.
  • Experience conducting environmental monitoring, assessments and reporting related to waste discharges.
  • Experience with environmental planning processes such as Waste Management Planning.
  • Experience with hazardous material spill response, special waste and contaminated sites.
  • Experience using computer software, including word processing (MS Word), spreadsheet (MS Excel) and database management.
  • Experience working with multiple projects or assignments concurrently.
  • Experience in negotiation with staff and clients from a diverse background.
Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:

  • Experience working for a regulatory agency responsible for the administration of waste discharges to the environment.
  • Experience in liaison with environmental regulatory agencies.

Provisions:

  • Willing and able to travel and meet the transportation requirements of the position (i.e. possess and maintain a valid BC Class 5 Driver's Licence or equivalent).
  • Must be physically able to perform field work, which may include travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight or extended stay in rough camp conditions and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Must be willing and able to work occasional evening and weekends to represent the program at public meetings and events.

About this Position:

Three (3) permanent, full time positions are currently available.

Two (2) positions will be in a Natural Resource Sector office in one of the following locations: Prince George, Williams Lake, Cranbrook, Nelson or Smithers.

One (1) position can be in any of the above Natural Resource Sector offices, as well as Kamloops, Penticton, Surrey, or Nanaimo.

These positions require frequent travel.
An eligibility list may be established for future vacancies in any Natural Resource Sector office across the province.
