Duties and Responsibilities:


Reporting to the Director, Operations & Infrastructure, the incumbent supervises the operations of the university's central computer, storage, backup and data centre systems which provide services to academic and administrative departments.

Management, support and maintenance of a variety of diverse computer systems is also required.

This entails initial configuration and installation of specific computer equipment, routine checks of the equipment, taking corrective action, general maintenance and the ability to assist with recovering system operation should a disaster occur.

The incumbent will coordinate the day to day operations and maintenance of the ITS Data Centres.


The incumbent must be technically capable of configuring a wide variety of computer and communications equipment as well as diagnosing any problems that arise.

Problems are resolved internally or referred to the appropriate contractor for resolution.

Since many problems may have a global influence on the services of ITS, a considerable degree of judgement and skill are required.

The incumbent is involved in the planning and budget process, making purchasing recommendations where necessary.


Responsibilities extend beyond a normal work day as resources are utilized twenty four hours a day, three hundred sixty five days a year.

This entails that the incumbent be "on call" as required and to work outside of regular business hours in order to complete specific work or to resolve problems.


Qualifications:


The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:

  • Thorough knowledge of hardware platforms, operating systems, and software packages
  • Excellent consulting and communication skills
  • Supervisory capability and maturity
  • Technical skills including operating systems support, file systems configuration, and storage connectivity methods
  • Understanding of power and cooling concepts in an Enterprise Data Centre
  • Integrity in handling computer access privileges
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals or technical procedures
  • Strong written and oral communication skills for reports, procedure manuals, and presentations
  • Experience tailored to academic environments and coop placement recruitment would be advantageous
  • Proficiency in French language considered an asset

Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:

  • Completion of a four year degree in Engineering or Computing Science.
  • Seven years of work experience in supporting hardware, software and communications with a supervisory background.
