Position Overview:

  • Support the participation and socialization of frail elderly participants in the Senior Day Program and in community programming throughout the city; provides programming support in all recreational and therapeutic activities for participants

Responsibilities:


  • Oversees meal program delivery and refreshment breaks for the Senior Day Program taking into consideration members' diverse needs (e.g., cultural, dietary, physical, social).
  • Uses the program database to access participant information and input dietary needs.
  • Sets up program room for coffee and conversation portion of the day and the noon meal.
  • Maintains the cleanliness and orderliness of the kitchen and uses the dishwasher to clean dishes following meals
  • Assists participants in socializing and participating in the various aspects of the program by taking into consideration each individual's physical, social, intellectual, and emotional needs.
  • Assists with or provides various types of programming such as facilitating games or discussion groups.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all issues related to the program participants.
  • Ensures room setups are complete for planned activities.
  • Responds to unplanned events (e.g., personal care accidents, personality conflicts, health concerns) and completes incident reports, as appropriate.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:


  • Must be reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
  • Must have the ability to support and project values compatible with the organization and participate as an effective team member.
  • Must have minimum Grade 12 diploma plus up to 1 year of additional job related postsecondary courses.
  • Must have 6 months experience working with frail elderly and/or adults with disabilities.
  • Must have demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must have Standard First Aid/CPR certification or be willing to obtain same within 2 months of hire.
  • Must have basic computer skills.
  • Must provide a satisfactory Police Records Check including vulnerable sector screening as a condition of employment.
  • Must be able to perform physical functions such as cleaning, lifting, tidying, room set ups, pushing wheelchairs, assisting participants in and out of chairs, assisting participants in and out of the van, walking with participants, offering other forms of assistance to participants and provide personal care assistance in the washroom.
  • Must have effective time management and organizational skills.
  • General knowledge of programming for older adults, with the ability to facilitate small group conversations, chair exercises and leisure programming components while ensuring participant safety is preferred.
  • Certification in safe food handling will be considered an asset.
