Controller

Permanent, Full Time

About the Job:

Reporting to the Vice President of Finance, IT & Transformation, the Controller is an important leader within the organization with overall responsibility for all Accounting as well as Financial Planning and Analysis activities across the organization.

Sheridan Nurseries is one of North America's largest vertically integrated Garden Centre and Nursery operators. It operates two leading business segments. The Nursery is responsible for growing hardy nursery stock and other live goods for wholesale. The retail segment operates eight retail Garden Centre locations across the Greater Toronto Area. The Controller partners with leaders across both operating segments to drive business performance.

Your Accountabilities:

Stewardship of the company's longterm strategy
Responsible for all major controllership functions including Financial Accounting, Tax, Treasury, Accounts Payable, and Accounts Receivable
Manage and review all period end financial close activities
Preparation of the period end financial package including financial statements, forecast, and variance analysis
Preparation of financial presentations to the executive team and Board of Directors
Manage the annual planning process by partnering with commercial leadership across all business units
Participate in the development of and support the Company's strategic plans
Lead the transformation of the controllership function, including the implementation of new systems and processes to improve efficiency and quality of work product
Partner with other departments to assist and improve operations
Manage compliance reporting & tax returns
Responsible for partnering with Sheridan's external auditors for the year end audit
Establish, manage, and monitor internal control processes
Lead and develop a diverse and dynamic team of controllership professionals
Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

University degree in Business/Accounting and/or CPA
Experience leading and developing diverse teams
Strong work ethic, attention to detail, well organized, exceptional customer service and team building skills
High level of critical and analytical thinking to identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
Prior experience in with business performance management systems (such as Hyperion Financial Management or OneStream) is considered an asset
Must be legally eligible to work in Canada
