Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Strategic Student Applicant Communications, the Communication Specialist/Content Writer works closely with the Academic Schools and other College divisions to discover, capture, and write stories and web content in alignment with the College's brand messaging, and to support recruitment and applicant conversion efforts.


They consistently produce high-impact, relational stories and content that build the College's reputation, bringing excellence and understanding of a range of writing styles.

The Specialist is skilled at writing with inclusivity at the core (i.e., in vocabulary, clarity, references, tone) and understands story structure, purpose, and audience.

They are also highly proficient at gathering information through research/interview techniques, and can distill their findings into engaging and dynamic stories.


Under the direction of the Manager, the Specialist helps develop communication plans/campaigns, and then coordinates the strategic communications line-up for prospective leads, applicants, and incoming new students for three overlapping intakes per year.

These include communications from deans, program chairs, the President, etc., and may be combined with transactional information that help move applicants through the enrolment funnel.

They ensure a good balance providing content that instructs, engages, and resonates.


Responsibilities
Writing/Content Creation

  • Crafts meaningful and engaging written content for a variety of channels to advance the strategic recruitment, applicant, and learner communications strategies of the College.
  • Seeks creative opportunities and makes recommendations on how to effectively communicate key messages to audiences at various levels.
  • Conducts interviews with leaders, staff, and students to generate original concepts for feature stories that align with the SEM Division's strategic intent; collects and compiles student and staff testimonials.
  • Researches and curates information on assigned topics related to higher education and provincial (i.e., Ontario), national, and global college sector from internal and external sources to inform stories and content; attributing and maintaining source records where appropriate.
  • Proofreads and factchecks all original and repurposed content.
  • Ensures a consistent brand story (i.e., visuals, voice, etc.) across all efforts; compiles and maintains a campaign style guide consistent with Centennial's brand and overall communication style.
Communication Campaign Coordination

  • Collaborates with the Manager in the development of a strategic SEM communications plan that includes recruitment, admissions, and applicant conversion personalized and generic communications, delivered at timely intervals and through appropriate channels.
  • Coordinates resources for communications plan/campaigns under the direction of the Manager; aimed at prospects, applicants, new admits (offer to accept conversion), and new students often by learner type (direct, nondirect, domestic, international, demographic focus, program area, etc.).
  • Serves as project coordinator to initiate and track the ongoing progress of campaign communications; reports on success, identifies issues and barriers, and suggests options for resolution.
  • Consults and collaborates with various departments, (e.g., recruitment, admissions, registration, financial aid) to compile important transactional information to include with motivational/persuasive messaging.
  • Partners with graphic and creative team to develop creative concepts and executions of assigned communications and coordinates teams to ensure the timely delivery of assignments.
