The Manager, Community Engagement and Public Affairs reports directly to the Director of Marketing and has the primary responsibility for developing and implementing communication programs and initiatives.

Additionally, this role oversees the community engagement plan.

The main objective is to enhance the awareness and understanding of the REAL brand externally and internally, by increasing awareness of the organization's offerings and establishing connections with the public, community organizations, nonprofits, stakeholders, public and private partnerships, and government entities.

The Manager also serves as the spokesperson for REAL and is responsible for managing and coordinating communications with various levels of government and community stakeholders.

The Manager takes the lead in developing business unit plans and managing staff to achieve the company's short and long-term strategic goals.

The position carries the responsibility of leading, guiding, and influencing government officials and community stakeholders through purposeful decision-making.

This includes recognizing the importance of information and targeting communication and relationship-building efforts to ensure REAL maintains its relevance through government and community stakeholder support.


WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • As a member of REAL's Management team, the Manager, Community Engagement and Public Affairs participates in the development of REAL's strategic planning process, develops, and implements the business plan to achieve the corporation's short and longterm goals.
  • Developing, implementing, and monitoring business unit critical success factors and key performance indicators
  • Leads, oversees, and manages REAL's Media Relations strategy and activities:
  • Leading proactive media outreach effort to enhance REAL's relationship with key media contacts.
  • Preparing and distributing media releases, media kits, fact sheets and other print or electronic materials as required.
  • Acts as spokesperson for REAL as required or when the President and Chief Executive Officer, Executive or Leadership team members are unavailable.
  • Developing and overseeing all internal and external corporate communications for REAL, ensuring appropriate execution and that messaging is consistent, aligned with brand standards and engaging.
  • Working alongside the Manager, Marketing to support and create key messaging and brand alignment.
  • Preparing speaking notes for the President and CEO.
  • Proactively seeking and sharing relevant corporate information with department staff at all organizational levels.
  • Collaborating with People Services to integrate REAL's People Brand within the overall Brand Strategy and ensure internal communications align and equip staff with relevant and timely corporate information.
  • Leading and enhancing REAL's Community Engagement Plan
  • Engaging key public affairs stakeholders within the community and at all levels of government to align public/community relations activities and strategies.
  • Monitoring public affairs developments at the municipal, provincial, and federal government levels and reporting activities impacting REAL to the Executive Leadership Team and/or taking action as required
  • Assisting in the coordination of events (virtual meetings, briefings, tours, etc.) and actively participating as host at events when required
  • Actively participating in team, staff and client meetings where required
  • Reporting on the status of the Community Engagement Plan and defining KPIs.
  • Contribute to the development of the department's annual budget (capital and financial), responsible for monitoring quarterly financial statements and forecasting/implementing appropriate expenditure controls to manage costs.
  • Managing, leading, guiding and directing the Community Engagement and Public Relations team.
  • Performs other duties on an as and when required basis.

WHAT IT TAKES

Education and Experience

  • Postsecondary education in journalism, new media communications, public relations or other relevant field
  • 5+ years of experience in journalism, media communications, public or community relations
  • Experience managing or coordinating the work of others to achieve business outcomes.
  • A strong record of accomplishment in writing and editing a variety of formats (print, digital and social).
  • Experience working in fastpaced, complex office environments with a high degree of organizational effectiveness.
