About the Position:
This position is responsible for the management and oversight of the overall operation of the Limnology & Microbiology department of the ALS Environmental Winnipeg location.
The Manager has overall accountability for ensuring that the Limnology and Microbiology Department adheres to the ALS Health & Safety program, meets all Quality Program objectives, achieves financial operational targets and fosters an engaging culture for employees.
Specific Responsibilities- Ensure adequate staffing for the department including recruitment, induction, training, performance management and scheduling;
- Fully adopt all aspects of the ALS Health & Safety Program and the Quality Program; including supporting new initiatives, identifying opportunities for improvement and employee commitment with Health & Safety and Quality;
- Provide supervision, ongoing training and career development for direct reports;
- Ensure that the department is aligned with the location's Strategic and Business Plan;
- Responsible for working with the Laboratory Manager to achieve overall EBIT and ROS targets.
- Establish and monitor cost controls to ensure the department stays within budget;
- Identify and implement continuous improvement ideas to increase productivity and efficiency.
- Recommend and prepare capital equipment purchase requisitions (CEP's) as required;
- Provide information to, and assists, the Laboratory Manager with preparation of the annual operating budget for the laboratory;
- Develop and implement an ongoing training program for Department staff to ensure diverse skill sets which supports crosstraining and enhances the ability of staff to respond to new analytical requests.
- Prepare and develop all SOP's and prepare recommendations for new or revised analytical methods.
- Approve timesheets and overtime using Kronos, schedule vacation and shift assignments.
- Investigate new business opportunities and plan for their implementation.
- Handle client queries pertaining to results and client needs.
- Assist Client Support with the preparation of quotes and budget planning as necessary.
- Research analytical queries from clients and make quick decisions concerning possible and appropriate methods to meet the client's needs. Help in the generation of quotes.
- Conduct lectures and/or seminars for clients
- May act as a backup to the Laboratory Manager.
- Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS Health and Safety policies and procedures;
- Other duties as assigned.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills;
- Excellent computer skills; Proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel and Outlook);
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
- Strategic Planning/Thinking and Implementation Abilities;
- Ability to multitask and to handle shifting priorities and changing workloads;
- Able to effectively manage change in a dynamic working environment.

- Project enthusiasm, positivity and motivation.
- Completion of a BSc or MSc degree in Microbiology, Limnology or related field or equivalent work experience.
- 5 years of environmental analytical laboratory experience, microscopic experience preferable
- A minimum of 3 years related management or supervisory experience.
- Familiarity with all applicable environmental legislation and regulations.
- Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
- Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required;
- Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities;
- Ability to lift up to 20kg in case of handling client samples;
- You may be exposed to unpleasant odours.
