Job Description:

The Laboratory Assistant will perform pre-analytical functions and blood collections on babies, infants and children.

Responsibilities also include collection, preparation, and labeling of specimen, pre-analytical preparation of samples such as centrifuging, aliquoting labeling, logging, specimen send out, data entry on Laboratory Information Systems, participation in quality assurance and quality improvement activities and compliance to departmental procedures and accreditation requirements, maintaining specimen collection equipment and following inventory control system.

The Laboratory Assistant will ensure and follow health and safety procedures as per the Hospital guidelines and legal requirements, and particiate in special projects as assigned.

The physical demands of the role may include but are not limited to prolonged sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing and pulling.

This position contributes to ensuring there is a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.


Skills and Qualifications:


  • MLA/T with certification from the MLPAO/CSMLS required
  • Recent Laboratory experience in a Hospital setting required
  • Must have experience collecting blood from newborns and children by venipuncture and capillary collection is required
  • Adept to safe work practices and have working knowledge of the quality systems required
  • Familiar with accreditation standards, and other relevant regulatory requirements
  • Experience performing preanalytical function such as sample sorting, receiving, accessioning and centrifugation for testing required
  • Ability to function independently within a selfdirected team environment
  • Experience with Meditech laboratory module preferred
  • Transportation Dangerous Goods (TDG) certification preferred
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal
  • Accuracy and attention to detail is required
  • Must be flexible to work multiple shifts
  • Demonstrated problem solving abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis is required
  • The successful external applicant is required to provide the applicable criminal record check, as requested by Human Resources, in accordance with federal and provincial legislation. Valid criminal record checks are in original format and dated with two months from date of conditional offer from CMH._
