Job Summary:


Reporting to the Manager Culture and Arts, with guidance from the Director, Spiritual Care, and in collaboration with leadership and other staff within other disciplines, the Jewish Cultural and Spiritual Programming Coordinator is responsible for the development and delivery of education, programs and materials to enrich the Jewish experience at Baycrest, with a sensitivity to, and awareness of broader cultural needs.

The Coordinator is also responsible for the planning and coordination of Jewish Cultural and Spiritual programs and events.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provides opportunities for staff to explore methods and models for facilitating a sense of ownership, empowerment, self-efficacy and agency among clients, by building these values into our cultural offerings
  • Provides Jewish and nonJewish cultural sensitivity training and orientation to new Baycrest employees and existing staff, as needed
  • Sources materials and resources (i.e., policies, articles, fact sheets, ideas and reflections for discussion and other project tools/frameworks)
  • Consults, collaborates, and leads in the design of cultural/spiritual programs (Jewish/nonJewish) leveraging knowledge from across disciplines, research, and technology
  • Observes Jewish programming throughout the Apotex and Hospital, including the Friday night Shabbat dining experience to identify opportunities for service enhancements
  • Explores the lived experience of our elders and feelings of empowerment, agency and purpose in cultural contexts
  • Program planning, implementation, and evaluation with stakeholder input from residents, families, resident advisory council and family advisory council
  • Explores and evaluates the role of intergenerational programming as an asset to cultural experience enhancement among clients
  • Assists in conducting Cultural & Spiritual Needs Assessments, as required, in collaboration with recreation and social work staff across the continuum of client care, in order to identify optimal approaches to addressing the genuine cultural and spiritual needs of Baycrest clients
  • Works, in collaboration with the Director, Spiritual Care, to develop and adapt cultural materials (i.e., prayer books, brochures) to address the cultural needs of Baycrest's clients while incorporating potential challenges to cognition and physical function.
  • Collaborates with Volunteer department and the Director, Spiritual care to recruit Spiritual Care volunteers with a culturally relevant knowledge base in Hebrew language, Jewish history, Israel and Jewish values
  • Works with the Director, Spiritual Care to create new partnerships with Jewish, nondenominational, multifaith organizations, community centres, synagogues, schools etc. that can help enhance/bridge to the programs created onfloor and the ones designed for offfloor.
  • Fosters cultural diversity sensitivity within Baycrest's broader culture by engaging staff and clients from diverse backgrounds, and creating opportunities to celebrate cultural diversity within the Apotex and Hospital
  • Serves as an advocate for spiritual care and the meaning of integrating cultural engagement into the daily lives of Baycrest's clients
  • Complies with health & safety requirements.
  • Performs job responsibilities in a manner that supports Baycrest's safety culture.
  • Participates in skills and knowledge development initiatives.
  • Performs crossfunctional and other duties, as assigned and/or required.
  • Required to work onsite as needed for any Jewish holidays/special days identified by Baycrest.

Qualifications include but are not limited to:

  • Bachelor degree in Humanities, Social Sciences or related disciplines with a particular expertise in Judaic Studies is required
  • Minimum of two (2) years relevant experience
  • Education and/or experience in project management is preferred
  • Experience in the development and implementation of cultural diversity programs is an asset.
  • Experience with Holocaust survivors is an asset.
  • Experience supervising volunteers/students is an asset
  • Knowledge of Jewish culture, Holy Days and festivals
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word and Outlook and excellent Internet knowledge.
  • Excellent written, verbal and listening communication skills with internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent time management skills with adherence to prioritizing tasks and deadlines
  • Demonstrated skills in the provision of initiating, planning, executing, monitoring/controlling/and closing project lifecycle phases
  • Effective problem solving and conflict resolution skills
