Position Summary


The Child and Youth Care Practitioner is part of a multi-disciplinary team that addresses and supports issues related to youth ages 12-26, their family and their community.

Through facilitation and coordination, this position is responsible for empowering youth and encouraging and supporting Community Members to identify needs, develop strategies, and implement programs and services that respond to the issues.

In addition, this position is responsible for providing opportunities for increased community capacity and supporting public education and community engagement.

Motivated and experienced Child and Youth Care Practitioner to support our clients/families in the region. Our goal is to bring institutional quality support directly to the home, in the centre or at school. Creating lasting results while keeping families together.


We work directly in the home, at the centre or at school, with clients suffering from a wide range of mental health and behavioural conditions, including ASD, ADHD, ASD Borderline Personality Disorder, Intermittent Explosive Disorder, Conduct Disorder, and Aggressive Tendencies, as well as youth involved in the Justice System.

Staff will work closely with management, social workers, psychologists, mental health professionals, and family members to foster the best treatment outcomes possible.

Applicants should be experienced in implementing support plans, behavioural tracking, and data logging.

Strong crisis management, verbal de-escalation, therapeutic intervention skills, and valid NVCI are required for this position.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Outreach activities to atrisk youth (ages and their families, including identification of needs and interests through planning and facilitation;
  • Inhome support and family coaching. In the centre or at school.
  • Develops and implements/facilitates communitybased leadership and mentoring programs and workshops that develop the selfconfidence, social and life skills of participants;
  • Develops/implements special projects and workshops that meet the identified needs of the community;
  • Facilitates project activities and community forums related to youth needs;
  • Promotes community volunteerism and recognizes volunteers, supervises volunteers and ensures proper orientation, evaluation, and feedback;
  • Supports advocacy and increases awareness around youth issues.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  • Diploma in the Child and Youth Care Practitioner program, or degree in Social Work, or an equivalent combination of education and training;
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience working with youth, their family and their community in a communitybased model of practice, including community capacity building and mobilization;
  • Training and experience with group facilitation and leadership development;
  • Knowledge of risk, risk assessment and protective factors faced by LGBTQ+ youth;
  • Knowledge of building resilience and community belonging through the youth dropin model;
  • Lived experience of homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia is an asset;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of professional standards and ethical guidelines for child and youth workers, counsellors and social service workers, including ethical challenges and guidelines for providing service to gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation that may have dual roles within the LGBTQ+ communities.
