The Opportunity:

The City of Red Deer is currently recruiting for a permanent full-time
Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators are responsible for the day-to-day operation and control of the City's Level IV Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Key accountabilities are to perform work functions that ensure compliance to established policies and procedures, OH&S, and the Approval to Operate.

The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators provide for the safe and efficient operation of plant equipment, treatment processes, and for the reliable treatment and discharge of wastewater to the environment.


  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Education or training in a one (1) year water/ wastewater related technical program is preferred.
  • Wastewater Treatment Level 1 (one) Alberta Environment Operator's Certification or equivalent with a requirement to achieve Level 2 (two) within 4 years.
  • Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Class 5 Drivers License
  • Four (4) years in a Level III or IV wastewater treatment system or equivalent
  • Must successfully pass all safety certificate courses currently required.
  • Knowledge of 15 PSIG boilers is considered an asset.
  • Ability to recognize, assess and control hazards in the workplace.
  • Ability to utilize and maintain required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Demonstrated safety skills in the use of specialized protective equipment for chemical handling or containment and clean up, including respirators, SCBA, and air quality monitors. Some work may require use of harnesses and hoisting equipment.
  • Ability to exercise care when working near construction and traffic.
  • Must have the knowledge and ability to use various power tools and hand tools in a safe manner.
  • Welldeveloped verbal, computer, written and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Strong computer aptitude including demonstrated proficiency with City based computer programs, databases, spreadsheets and wordprocessing software.
  • Demonstrate mechanical aptitude and the ability to effectively utilize a wide range of equipment.
  • Deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
  • Demonstrate ability to work unsupervised and cooperate with colleagues as a team, to understand and follow instructions and to provide guidance and instructions to junior staff.
  • Must be physically fit in order to climb ladders, work at heights, open and close valves, lift, shovel, bend and twist in awkward positions.
  • Be able to read and understand blueprints, drawings, schematics and maps.
  • Requires oncall rotation, shift work, to work extended shifts, and respond to after hour emergencies.
  • Ability to troubleshoot diverse problems and exercise critical thinking. Ability to handle new or emergency situations in a logical and reasonable manner.
  • Knowledge of a municipal government operating environment including the City's Approval to Operate.
  • Hepatitis A and B inoculation is recommended prior to employment.

$34.95 to $39.72 per hour


Hours of Work:

80 hours biweekly; 10 hour rotating days shifts; standby/on-call required during off duty hours.
