Location:
Comox Valley Seniors Village


Hours/Schedule: 30 hours per week - Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday


SUMMARY OF POSITION:


Reporting to the Recreation Manager, the recreation assistant assists in the planning, implementing and evaluation of activity programs to meet the physical, social, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and cultural needs and interests of the residents and tenants.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Include but not limited to;


  • Assists in the development of recreation and leisure services including program research development, implementation and evaluation.
  • Carries out established recreation programs including, but not limited to, outings, exercises, crafts, social events, entertainment, games, music, etc.
  • Assists in the completion and posting of monthly calendars and newsletters outlining programs and services available to residents and families.
  • Assists in the co-ordination of external groups to provide in-house programs.
  • Participates in necessary committees related to the care and services of the residents.
  • Assists residents to, during, and from programs as required.
  • Assists, encourages, and motivates residents to participate in social, spiritual, physical, mental and cultural recreational activities.
  • Observes and reports any changes in residents to Recreation Manager and/or Nurse.
  • Documentation as per policy and procedures and confidentiality and security.
  • Ensures residents' rights are maintained.
  • Ensures recreational equipment and supplies are used, maintained and stored in a safe, clean, and efficient manner. Reports unsafe or faulty equipment to manager.
  • 12. Actively participates in C.Q.I. program, meetings, committees and educational inservices as required. Assists in the maintenance of statistical records.
  • 13. Assists with admission/orientation of new residents and tenants.
  • 14. Provides guidance, assistance and support to volunteers. Assists Recreation Manager in the evaluation processes of Volunteers. Encourages residents/tenants as volunteers in their own community.
  • 15. Required to work positively and collaboratively with all team members and supervisors.
  • 16. Performs other related duties to ensure quality holistic resident service.

QUALIFICATIONS:


  • At least two year diploma in Activation techniques, recreation therapy, gerontology, Dementia Studies, or equivalent from a recognized college or university.
  • 2. Preferable minimum of two years' experience in a seniors focused environment.
  • 3. Basic First Aid Certificate (Current).
  • 4. Must have Food Safe Course Certificate (current).
  • 5. Valid Class 4 (Unrestricted) BC Driver's License.
  • 6. All successful applicants must pass the vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check applicable to Provincial guidelines.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • 2. Good interpersonal and organizational skills, ability to follow direction and work in a team environment.
  • 3. Knowledge of programming needs for older adults diagnosed with dementia.
  • 4. Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
  • 5. Basic computer skills including Word, Publisher, and Outlook.
  • 6. Must be in good health and free of pet or detergent/cleaning agent allergies.
