Kennedy House (KH) is a not-for-profit organization with a long-standing dedication to providing exceptional personalized care for youth in the Greater Toronto Area for over 50 years.

KH started with an initial family-like group home in 1971 and currently operates several residential and community-based programs, for marginalized and at-risk youth, including:


  • One residential home for young people in care;
  • Three homes for youth and young adults living with developmental disabilities;
  • A Day Treatment school program for youth struggling in the typical school setting;
  • Kennedy House Youth Centre, a secure custody facility for male youth experiencing conflict with the law;
  • Bailiff services to safely and securely transport youth experiencing conflict with the law;
  • Kennedy House After School Program for children aged 413 in underserved communities throughout Scarborough; and
  • Kennedy House Youth Shelter, for youth aged 1624 experiencing homelessness.

***Kennedy House is looking for a dynamic, results-driven, and team oriented individual to join our team in the role of Assistant Manager, Youth Justice Services.


The KH - Youth Justice Division is a 24/7 secure custody/detention facility for male youth that have either been charged or currently awaiting sentencing of a serious crime committed in the community.

A serious crime, is a crime that if committed by an adult a sentence of five years or more will be awarded.


Reporting to the Senior Manager, Youth Justice Services the incumbent will be part of a dynamic supervisory team that implements and maintains the overall functioning of the Centre.

The incumbent will ensure the proper operation of the facility on a daily basis in accordance with the Child Youth and Family Services Act and the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Their primary responsibilities are to supervise and support the Supervisory Team and to develop, implement and oversee consistent and centralized administrative systems.

Additionally, the Assistant Manager will maintain on-call responsibility to the facility on a scheduled basis, and is available on an informal basis at all times in a consultative and supportive role for decision making and will provide crisis response to the facility when required either directly or by phone.

The Assistant Manager will act in place of the Senior Manager, Youth Justice Services in their absence.

This is a
full-time on-site position located at our Youth Centre in Ajax, Ontario.

The Assistant Manager will work an average of
35 hours per week and will require being flexible to best meet the needs of the Program.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works with Senior Management to ensure that staffing administration issues are addressed in a timely manner
  • Provides ongoing administrative supervision for kitchen staff and supervisors as well as indirect supervision of line
  • Oversees staff training and supervision
  • Provides recommendations for promotion, demotion and dismissal to the Senior Manager
  • Monitors and maintains the front line staff and supervisor schedules
  • Ensures that all stat, vacation and comp time is scheduled as per the collective agreement and tracked
  • Ensures that all rules are followed as outlined in the policy and procedure manual and in the Collective Agreement
  • Ensures that all staff training needs, internal and external, are met according to Kennedy House and Ministry Standards
  • Identifies training needs for staff and acts as a resource to the agency training program
  • Submitting payroll biweekly to the Senior Manager
  • Maintains a centralized petty cash system for the supervisory team
  • Supports the Clinical Program as required
  • Files and follows up on serious occurrence reports (SOR) with the Ministry;
  • Ensures that all nutritional needs of the residents at the Centre are met daily
  • Attends and participates in meetings such as management, unit, staff, and case management
  • Monitors H&S Inspections and attends H&S meetings to ensure that the documentation is up to date and accurate
  • Take on the role of Provincial Director for Detention, when required
  • Chairs the Youth Advisory committee meetings and ensure the clients' voices are heard
  • Plays a significant role in the successful implementation, facilitation, and evaluation of several clinical groups at the Centre
  • Role models appropriate and necessary cognitive behavioural interventions with young persons in order to support frontline staff in their development
  • Intervenes during emergencies (of a medical, safety or security nature) and activate appropriate precautionary and contingency plans
  • Provides on call support on a rotating basis
