Job Overview:


Working under general supervision, an Underwriter I - Group is responsible for analyzing the acceptability of low complexity business with low to moderate premium volume according to company guidelines by working collaboratively with our sales force and providing value added expertise and service to both potential and existing policyholders.


Responsibilities:


  • Perform risk analysis using group underwriting principles and tools as well as external data sources for the purposes of quoting, negotiating, and authorizing the acceptance of risk
  • Review group insurance for both broker and Third-Party Administration partners for quotation and underwriting requirements to evaluate the degree of risk involved through assessment of claim history, occupational hazards, financial background, insurable interest and other information pertinent to the decision
  • Determine eligibility for policy renewals based on company guidelines and retention targets
  • Maintain accurate records of decisions made and maintain completeness of policy data
  • Communicate decisions and respond to requests in a prompt and professional manner
  • Provide excellent customer service and build positive relationships with internal and external clients
  • Maintain a good understanding of rating procedures, wordings, underwriting policies and regulations both within Traditional Group and Third-Party Administrator lines
  • Assist with field inquiries including coverage details, coverage changes and renewal rating in a prompt and professional manner
  • Handle work assignments, including projects as assigned efficiently
  • Work effectively towards the department Key performance indicator (KPI) goals of the team
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:


  • Postsecondary education or three years of related work experience
  • Good understanding of group insurance principles
  • Willingness to enroll in, or actively pursuing the Group Benefits Associate (GBA) Designation
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical, problem solving, mathematical and communication skills
  • Strong decisionmaking skills with the ability to provide justification
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Effective writing and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated planning, time management and organizing skills with the ability to prioritize daily tasks and fluctuating work volumes to meet deadlines
