  • This position is responsible for developing and implementing initiatives, assisting in developing tools and resources, organizing and overseeing cultural events and workshops, providing support services to students, providing support in addressing culturally sensitive issues, and overseeing VCC's Indigenous Gathering Spaces and Gathering Space Student Aids (Cousins).
    Job Duties/Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement initiatives that focus on the transition, adjustment, educational success, and personal growth of Indigenous learners.
  • Serve as the contact person for Collegerelated concerns from prospective and enrolled Indigenous learners.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Director and Offices for Student Conduct and Judicial Affairs, provide support in approaching/addressing issues in a manner that reflects the cultural sensitivities of the learner.
  • In consultation with the Marketing & Communication's Department, develop tools and resources that facilitate Indigenous students' access to pertinent information, such as student newsletters, and an uptodate department web site.
  • Oversee the organization and implementation of cultural workshops for the College.
  • Plan and execute annual Indigenous days of significance, including, but not limited to, National Indigenous History Month, National Indigenous Peoples Day, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Orange Shirt Day, National Day of Awareness for MMIWG2S and Moose Hide Campaign Day.
  • Plan, organize and evaluate cultural and social events in collaboration with the Indigenous Engagement Advisors, other departments, and community organizations.
In consultation with the Marketing Department, promote these events and activities.

  • Provide confidential support services to students seeking information or conflict resolution including consultation, referrals, explanation of policies and procedures, review of applicable resolution methods, and assisting in facilitating meetings.
  • In collaboration with IECE's Associate Director and Offices for Student Conduct and Judicial Affairs, provide support in approaching/addressing issues in a manner that reflects the cultural sensitivities of the learner.
  • Collaborate with College departments to address barriers for Indigenous learners.
  • Provide daytoday operational oversight of the Gathering spaces to ensure that users have the resources necessary to support their experiences at VCC.
  • Order food and inventory for Gathering Space pantries.
  • Collaborate with IT services to ensure computer workstations have programs and software required for students to carry out their class work/print documents.
  • Oversee the work of the Gathering Space Cousins (Student Aids), including:
  • participate in interviewing and hiring Gathering Space "Cousin" positions in collaboration with the Associate Director, IECE;
- design and implement appropriate training experiences, and serve as a professional mentor to the Gathering Space students;
- coordinate the scheduling and daily operations of the Indigenous Gathering Space Cousins (Student Aids ) including onboarding, monitoring absences and supporting time sheet entry and approval.

  • Develop tools and resources that increase the effectiveness of the Indigenous Gathering Spaces, assisting students with post secondary transition and support services that enhance student success.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Completion of a Diploma in a relevant discipline and two (2) years of related experience designing and managing Indigenous support programs and services or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous education and culture and the systemic barriers Indigenous learners face.
  • Demonstrated understanding of respectful practices and protocols when working with Elders and Indigenous communities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in program development, implementation, and evaluation.
