Parks Maintenance Worker (Temporary - up to 8 months)

Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department

POSITION FUNCTION


Parks Maintenance Workers fulfil an important role in maintaining the landscapes and features of public parks and open spaces throughout the City.

This position performs general labouring functions, utilizing a variety of power equipment and vehicles to contribute to the overall effectiveness of the Park operations.

The responsibilities directly impact the aesthetic appeal and functionality of our community's outdoor areas, ensuring the continued upkeep of public spaces.


KEY DUTIES
Park Maintenance Support

Assist with Parks operations by performing assigned tasks in horticulture, arboriculture, turf, and infrastructure such as:

  • Mowing, trimming, weeding, digging, raking, and removing refuse and debris.
  • Preparing, planting, and maintaining flower and shrub beds, landscapes, boulevards, turf, sports fields, and young trees with direction provided.
  • Support constructing and maintaining pathways, hard infrastructure, playgrounds, irrigation, furniture, playground equipment and ponds and streams with direction provided.
  • Watering of trees, baskets, turf, and various garden landscapes.
  • Flagging and directing traffic around equipment and operations and in public laneways.
  • Recording accurate daily equipment logs, material slips, time sheets and tree watering or maintenance records.
  • Conducting pre
- and post-trip inspections, perform minor maintenance to vehicles, tools, and equipment.

Park Equipment Operation

This role performs its assigned functions through the operation of:

  • Various light-sized trucks, pick-ups, dump boxes, trucks with trailers or tanker trucks.
  • Light tractor equipped with turf/horticultural attachments.
  • Commercial rideon mowers to maintain grass in public spaces, requiring proficiency in adjusting and maintaining reel and blade height and in loading and unloading the mower from the trailer.
  • Various light power equipment, such as light rollers, light allterrain utility vehicles, concrete mixers, and small vibrating tampers.
  • Various small power tools and equipment such as push mowers, rototillers, edgers, blowers, line trimmers, hedge trimmers, sod cutters, grinders, sanders and cut saws.
  • Various hand tools related to park maintenance.
Perform related duties where required and qualified.


INDEPENDENCE

  • Work is performed according to an assigned route or work program and reviewed by supervisor.
  • Problems such as changes to the route or complaints are referred to supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Effort:


  • Lift and move heavy equipment and materials. (occasional)

Mental Effort:


  • Short periods of intense concentration while operating equipment. (occasional)

Visual/Auditory Effort:


  • Normal.

Work Environment:


  • Exposure to dust, jarring and equipment noise and vibration. (occasional)
  • Work outside in all weather conditions. (continuous)
  • Work in an environment where protective measures must be taken to avoid exposure to chemicals, fertilizers, and biohazards. (occasional)
  • Exposure to traffic. (occasional)

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Understand and discuss job related matters.
  • Operate a variety of light industrial equipment and vehicles.
  • Use hand tools and light power equipment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
  • Work safely on job sites.

QUALIFICATIONS

Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:

  • Grade 10.
  • Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence.

Experience:


  • 1 year of related experience in commercial landscape, horticulture and/or tree maintenance.

OTHER:


  • May be requested to substitute in a more senior position where qualified

Work schedule:
Monday to Friday, (40 hour work week)


$31.16 per hour, Pay Grade 4 (under review)
