JOB SUMMARY
The Digital Communications Specialist is a highly technical, skilled, creative and energetic member of the Corporate Communications team.


Reporting to the Manager, Corporate Communications, the Digital Communications Specialist with be responsible for maintaining and implementing digital communications across the City.

This will include marketing & advertising campaigns, promotions of City events and news, corporate priorities and key messaging.

In this role you will be responsible for coordinating social media (managing content, handling incoming, growing our followers, understanding latest trends, making suggestions for improvement, etc), editing website and intranet content, assisting with data analytics & reporting and maintaining content calendars & best practices.

You will be relied upon to juggle multiple initiatives simultaneously and to work closely with the Digital Advisor on other tasks as assigned, including onsite event support.


ROLES and RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Communications

  • Execution of Citywide digital communications strategy including social media, website and intranet content that will increase user engagement & followership across channels.
  • Regularly scan for emerging opportunities and trends.
  • Collaborate with and engage departmental staff in content creation and posting for various channels, including our City blog, Markham Now.
  • Work with Digital Advisor to continually adapt and improve Markham's digital presence.
  • Use collaborative and accessible best practices to manage posting and responding on various digital channels.
  • Updating and codevelopment of content calendars and best practices.

Digital Communications Strategy

  • Responsible for coordination and implementation of Markham's social media strategy and website platforms to engage the public on corporate priorities.
  • Work with internal partners to ensure access and controls on social media platforms & website.
  • Ability to communicate and engage with diverse audiences.
  • Manage and triage all social media inquiries sent to the City of Markham.
  • Assist with content creation as needed (including copy, graphics, videos).

Monitor, Measure, Mitigate

  • Work closely with Digital Advisor to prepare various reports for alldigital channels.
  • Prepare adhoc organic social media reports for key initiatives, events and campaigns.
  • Maintain current knowledge of best practices for online and social media engagement and measurement tools.

Corporate Communications & Special Events Teamwork

  • Contribute to broad communications plans where online and digital communications support is required.
  • Assist with the promotion of Corporate Special Events.
  • Ability to work on assignments and programs as required after regular hours and weekends.
  • Coordinate postevent photography (internal storage, posting to Flickr, etc.)
  • Assisting with live streaming and other event support as required.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • University degree in digital media, communications, marketing or business.
  • An experienced communication professional with a minimum of 23 years working as a digital communications specialist in a corporate communications or marketing environment.
  • Must be able to demonstrate current best practices for social media, web content management and data analysis
  • Excellent communications skills both verbal and written.
  • Current and advanced knowledge of:
  • Social media management platforms (Hootsuite and Meltwater preferred)
  • Various web content management systems (Drupal preferred)
  • Intranet platforms (SharePoint preferred)
  • Excel (must be able to do various analysis' and work with pivot tables)
  • Canva or other graphic design software
  • Strong technical skill set including, but not limited to:
  • HTML, CSS, Java (basic coding)
  • SharePoint knowledge
  • UX Design
  • Data analysis and running formulas/functions in excel
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to build and manage relations.
  • Proven project management and multitask skills.
  • Tact, diplomacy and political acuity are a necessity.
