Job Summary

  • The Dalhousie Human Resources department is committed to a vision where employees are engaged, supported, and inspired to achieve excellence at Dalhousie University. Reporting to the Director (Acting), Employee Relations, and as part of a professional and enthusiastic HR team, the Human Resources Advisor will provide generalist human resources services to University departments, with a focus on job design and administration of the University's job classification methodologies. The role will be consultative to administrators, department heads, employees, and other Human Resource staff on a number of issues related to job design, collective agreement/policy administration and other HR matters.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build collaborative working relationships with administrators in Faculties and departments in order to develop an understanding of their HR needs and objectives.
  • Collaborate with departments on developing content for job postings that convey key responsibilities, brand standards, and appropriate qualifications.
  • Advise administrators and managers on provisions of non academic collective agreements (primarily NSGEU Local 77), employee handbooks, University policies and procedures, and legislative requirements.
  • Serve on committees or project teams as required (e.g., for changes to policy and practices, investigating new products, organizing HR events).

Note

The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.


Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree plus approximately three to five years' related human resource experience, preferably in a unionized environment (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • The ability to professionally manage and deliver priorities in a client focused environment with an appreciation and understanding of diversity and inclusiveness.
  • The capacity to build effective working relationships and collaborate with individuals or groups in a consulting capacity.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills and judgement is key, along with adaptive and effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Attention to detail, ability to manage multiple priorities, and problemsolving skills.

Assets

  • Experience administering job evaluation/classification systems.
  • Human resource management certificate, CPHR designation, or equivalent.
