Child Development Institute (CDI) is a leading children's mental health agency in the City of Toronto offering a range of services to approximately 3,000 children ages 0‐12, youth ages 13-18 and their families each year.

Our mission is to promote and support the healthy development of children and to strengthen the families and communities in which they live.

We provide four streams of service to families in need:

early intervention, family violence, healthy child development and specialized mental health services for children and youth with learning disabilities.

***Child Development Institute is seeking an energetic Coordinator for our Toronto based Therapeutic Recreation Programs. Under the direction of the Manager, Therapeutic Recreation Programs, the Coordinator, ensures that the conceptualization and delivery of CDI programs and services are consistent with the mission, values, policies, procedures, standards and priorities of the organization and are provided within assigned resources. The Coordinator, Therapeutic Recreation Programs will provide vigorous leadership towards the achievement of service excellence and a quality professional environment.


What the role is all about..


  • Responsible for ensuring the quality, effective risk management, and safe operations of CDI's Therapeutic Recreation Programs.
  • Assisting with the preparation and delivery of Camp Towhee, including potential for summer involvement.
  • Provides training and leadership to a team of Therapeutic Recreation Instructors and group facilitators. This includes coaching, training and fidelity audits through a range of formal and informal approaches including individual and group meetings, workshops and program attendance.
  • Facilitates Therapeutic Recreation Groups, as required.
  • Assists with the research and development of additional therapeutic recreation programs, to meet client needs and agency goals.
  • Manages program waitlists, and facilitates therapeutic recreation assessments, group assignments, and weekly staffing.
  • Consults with other CDI staff, to ensure appropriate communication and coordination for internal program referrals and service coordination.
  • Ensures proper client documentation is completed in accordance with agency policies and procedures (i.e. group reports and electronic file notes).
  • Establishes and maintains positive relationships with families and their support network (community agencies, hospitals, etc.).
  • Participates in quality assurance, evaluation, data collection activities as required.
  • Assist with ensuring that programs operate within budget, meet all legislative requirements, and maintain Ministry, accreditation, and Occupational Health & Safety Standards.
  • Assist with the hiring, orientation and assignment of new program facilitators and volunteers.
  • Participates in the Clinical Managers & Coordinators groups as well as selected committees as required.
  • Performs other assigned duties in the interests of the agency.

What we hope you will bring

  • A Degree/Diploma in Child & Youth Care, Social Work, Therapeutic Recreation or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in working with children, youth, families and groups in a therapeutic setting.
  • Experience working with children & youth with mental health challenges complicated by learning disabilities (LDMH).
  • Experience facilitating and developing therapeutic recreation programs.
  • Experience supervising and leading teams of staff.

Skills, Attributes and Abilities

  • Experience delivering therapeutic recreation programs (mindfulness, yoga, fitness, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to work positively, calmly, and collaboratively with families and children.
  • Exceptional oral and communication skills.
  • High level of computer literacy
  • Strong organizational, analytical, problem solving and decisionmaking skills within scope of the role.
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a respectful and aware manner with groups from diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Workplace Environment

  • Governed by concurrent and dynamic deadlines, despite conflicting priorities and interruptions.
  • Onsite, inperson, from Monday to Friday and oncall during program delivery, as scheduled
  • Flexible hours, including evenings, to accommodate organizational and program needs.
  • Occasional travel to other CDI locations, including the Towhee Program in Haliburton, if required.
  • Frequent handling of queries and calls from employees, colleagues, families, and community partners.
  • Capacity to model and perform physical exercise in the context of a martial arts class, including but not limited to calisthenics, body weight exercises, yoga, and partner activities.
