The main focus of the Plumber position is to manage requests from Division sites pertaining to plumbing maintenance/repairs, new installations or modernization projects.

The Job is responsible for plumbing, steam, and hot water heating, gas distribution systems, air-cooling devices, controls and other related mechanical components.

Other duties include installing plumbing and heating systems into small new structures as well as existing structures.

The incumbent requires a strong knowledge of the plumbing, sprinkler and gas codes and is expected to maintain up-to-date technical knowledge through profession development activities.

Work involves procedures of a technical nature and uses hand tools and various sophisticated test equipment. The incumbent works with mínimal supervision or as part of various teams in completing projects and activities. Assignments vary considerably depending on the unit served.


Some jobs may entail supervisory responsibility and in these cases the incumbent must achieve smooth workflow by delegating assignments and explaining procedures.

The job requires a current Alberta Journeyman Plumber trades certificate along with several years of experience.


Work is performed within the Division/department policies and procedures and is guided by plumbing, construction and maintenance standards and principles and those established by the department.

Work is completed in compliance with the Alberta Building Code, Plumbing, Sprinkler and Gas Codes, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) regulations and guidelines and the Division's goals and objectives.

There is considerable discretion exercised by this incumbent in the performance of its regular duties.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Project Management

  • Install plumbing and heating in small new structures (e.g. portable classrooms) as well as existing structures
  • Maintain operation of the mechanical components of physical plants
  • Carry out preventive maintenance program with respect to the mechanical services in the schools and buildings
  • Participate as a member of a project planning and design team, utilize independent judgement and input from team members
  • Install, inspect, troubleshoot, service, repair and maintain a variety of plumbing/mechanical equipment and parts
  • Monitor inventory control including purchasing, receiving, shipping and categorizing supplies, materials and equipment
  • Assist department staff with a variety of projects and provide coveroff during absences
  • Other duties as assigned
Maintenance and repairs

  • Assist in development of preventive maintenance program and assessment of existing plumbing/heating systems for modernization
  • Respond to notification of breakdown, failures, or disruptions and effect restoration of service using the most efficient method to complete the work
  • Evaluate and report on performance of various products and make recommendations with respect to standardization, types and makes of equipment
  • Assist in the collection of performance results with respect to mechanical equipment and parts for purchasing use
  • Maintain technical knowledge through professional development activities
  • Assist in the cleanup of worksites
  • Ensure tools and equipment are operating properly and report those that are not
  • Ensure worksites are clean and maintained within safety standards
Building security

  • Ensure materials and tools are safely operated and stored at all times
  • Secure building as required depending on worksite requirements

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge and Experience:

  • High School, plus a current valid Alberta Journeyman Plumber trades certificate
  • Several years recent related experience with proven troubleshooting techniques and the ability to work with mínimal service information
  • A thorough knowledge of plumbing, steam, and hot water heating, gas distribution systems, air cooling devices, controls and other related mechanical components as well as a strong working knowledge of the plumbing, sprinkler and gas codes
  • Good understanding of basic construction and maintenance techniques
  • Knowledge of the safe use of power and manual tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety regulations and legislation including working in confined spaces
