Job Summary
Free Play for Kids is looking for a full-time manager for its Start to Play Program. The primary role is to lead the administration, coordination, growth and management of a team of 10+ coaches who deliver programs every night in 20+ community halls and recreation centers across
Edmonton.

Start to Play is Free Play's only fee based program - the rest of the programs are free. The goal of
Start to Play is to be a strong multi-sport recreation program that serves as a social enterprise.

This means a small fee is charged per child to help cover the cost of the coaches and facility rentals.

The long term hope is that the fees from paying participants in this program will offset the costs for another child to take part in our free after school childcare programs.


Beyond having the technical skills to lead a team of 10+ coaches, the Start to Play program manager must also be excellent at communication with community leagues as well as parents/guardians and have a strong grasp of how to market and fill programs.

Finally, Start to

Play is an ambitious initiative that is expanding to include march break camps, summer camps and potentially even day time and weekend programs.

The Start to Play Programs Manager will work 35 hours per week within regular programming hours. Typical hours of this roll are 1-9pm. This schedule has flexibility, but requires the individual to be available to support program needs as they arise.


Education & Qualifications

  • Degree or diploma in Recreation Management, Commerce, Business Administration,
Business Management, Education, Kinesiology or equivalent from a recognized postsecondary institution.

  • Experience running large sport based programs, experience running large camps, experience working in schools.
  • Experience managing a team of staff members to ensure the best quality of service
  • Experience with community outreach, public speaking and marketing are major assets.
  • Program administration or coordination experience such as scheduling and curriculum development are a requirement.
  • Social or nonprofit experience would be considered an asset.
  • Access to a network of community contacts to help build and promote the Start to Play program.
  • Representative of the community that Free Play serves.
  • Experience playing sport recreationally or competitively and understanding the power of sport as a tool for social good is considered a must.
  • Standard First Aid Certification and CPR training.
  • Must hold a Valid Driver's Licence with no at fault accidents.
  • Experience with technology such as Google Suite, Microsoft, Google Meet and
Connecteam app is considered an asset.

  • Clear and up to date criminal and vulnerable sector check.

Responsibilities

  • Foster strong relationships with community leagues & other space holders to use venues: o Manage day to day logistics of venues: lease agreements, keys, equipment storage o Work to secure venues 6+ months in advance of launching programs o Work with venue management (community leagues) to ensure program is full and a strong positive addition for the neighborhood o Provide daily onsite supervision & support to help with opening, closing and managing venues to ensure they are well cared for, cleaned and respected
  • Foster strong relationships with a team of 10+ coaching staff to ensure they are inspired, motivated and organized o Being on call as support for staff o Manage day to day staff scheduling, sickness and vacation requests o Provide daily onsite supervision & support to help staff run the program, provide staff with feedback on performance, fill in when coaches are sick or away and to clearly understand the children at each site as well as the workflow
  • Marketing and outreach o Ensuring each Start to Play site is full of participants and optimized by:
  • Working with community leagues to support registration by providing posters, social media content, flyers and attending community events
  • Running promotional tables & events at evening, day time and weekend events (eg. festivals, markets)
  • Connecting with Edmonton Public and Catholic schools to run in school sessions where promotional material can be provided for registration or paid programming can be directly provided to the school o Working with the Free Play marketing team to ensure photos, videos, and write ups are regularly prepared and shared to showcase the program.
  • Ensuring Free Play marketing team attends sessions, tournaments and important Start to Play events
