    Position Overview
  • A regular fulltime opportunity exists in the Parks Department for a Trades
  • Gardener. This is skilled horticultural work at the journeyman level in performing gardening, and/or nursery tasks in the cultivation, propagation, planting and maintenance of a variety of plants, trees, shrubs, flowers, lawns and related parks and recreational areas.

The successful applicant will possess:


  • A thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, material, tools and equipment used in horticulture, and nursery operations
  • Considerable knowledge of plants, shrubs, perennials, annuals, trees and of related stock and material
  • The ability to perform skilled horticultural and nursery tasks under mínimal supervision
  • The ability to assign, check and supervise the work of assistants engaged in unskilled and semiskilled gardening, nursery and related tasks
  • The ability to prepare and maintain work records, and
  • Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment, vehicles and material used in the work.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12, along with completion of a BC Landscape Horticulturalist apprenticeship program, and sound related journeyman experience OR an equivalent combination of training and experience. A valid BC Class 5 driver's license, a Journeyman Certificate in Landscape Horticulture or equivalent diploma or certificate, and an Integrated Pest Management Certificate are required.

Compensation

  • The hourly pay range for this unionized position is $40.46 per hour (2021 rate) based on a 40hour work week.
