SUMMER STUDENTS - Community Farm Hand

Full-time Seasonal Work:April 24, September 1, 2023

Hours:
M-F, 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Wage:
$18.10/hour

We are looking for passionate, imaginative, eco-minded individuals to help us care for our organic community farm and property.

You will help fill the TGOD mission of producing and providing organically grown fruits, vegetable, meat and eggs to our local Food Share program for our community members and families in need.

The community farm position provides hands-on experience and training to develop your skills and understanding as a farm worker in an ecological, organic agriculture system with the purpose of solely giving back to the Hamilton Community.

Applicants will be working with the soil by planting, transplanting, weeding, watering and harvesting fruits and vegetables.

Working with animals and caring for them in an organic and natural way, tending to our small orchard and the greater farm property maintenance through lawn mowing, tree maintenance and planting, weed eating, flower bed maintenance and much more.

The use of hand tools, equipment and learning different growing methods and practices are part of the farm experience.

Weekly deliveries to our community charity, and seeing how we are giving back and making a difference, is the rewarding part of this job.

Hours of work will be Monday to Friday between 7am to 4:00 pm, 40 hours per week, with an occasional Weekend.

The seasonal work will begin April 24, 2023 and continue until approximately September 1, 2023.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to:

Work outdoors in seasonal conditions such as: very hot temperatures, dry and/or dusty environments, damp and/or wet climates, humid climates.
Work 40 hours per week.
Work with live animals which may include chickens and goats.
Work around farm and garden related smells

Physical demands of
performing the duties of this job include:

Standing for long periods of time.
Handon, dexterous work. Semireaching to fullreaching overhead.
Lifting, carrying, pushing, shoveling, and/or pulling up to 50lbs or more.
Crouching, kneeling, bending and/or stooping repetitively throughout out the shift.

Knowledge, Skills and Other Abilities:

Gardening and animal experience
Oral and written communication skills
Time management skills
Reliable and dependable
Able to work in all weather conditions
Able to perform strenuous physical labor and lifting
Ability to complete all barn cleaning schedules
Team player; able to work well with a variety of people
Tractor / Gator experience an asset

NOTE:
You will be responsible for providing your own safety boots and gloves.

AMONG YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist with planning summer gardens, orchard and crop rotations
Propagation (direct seeding, transplants, grafts, etc.)
Preventive management and control of weeds, pests, and pest diseases
Natural fertilization as needed
Harvest fruit, vegetables, berries
Watering all plants, trees and bushes as needed
Vegetable conditioning (washing, packaging, delivery)
Production schedules and plans for food deliveries
Care and maintenance of property including grass, gardens, walking trail, orchard, fencing, barn facility and equipment
Care, bedding, feeding and cleaning of farm animals
General health maintenance and grooming of animals
Collection of eggs, wool, etc from animals
Assist with other community farm work as needed
Maintenance of fence rows and ditch with weed eater

PROFILE OF THE IDEAL APPLICANT

Has a good level of experience in gardening, animal care, landscaping, working outdoors and farming
Capacity for physical work under variable weather conditions
Ease of working independently and in teams
Attention to detail and can see what needs to be done
Has tractor and gator operation experience
Able to work the occasion weekend, if needed
Has a valid driver's license
