We are looking for a cross-platform National Assignment Editor (digital, radio, TV) on a permanent basis. For reference purposes, the work schedule will be Monday to Friday.


Your role:


As National Assignment Editor based in Montreal, you will coordinate the work of reporters assigned to cover regional, national or international news for our various platforms, as needed.

You may also be required to vet and edit reporters' copy, as needed.


Your role will be to consult, plan, assign and coordinate journalistic resources to cover the most relevant and impactful stories and events, in accordance with corporate standards and policies of Radio-Canada.

This position requires someone with initiative, judgment, leadership skills, a strong contact network, as well as the ability to work well in a team and under pressure, while maintaining good working relationships with your colleagues.

You must also have excellent knowledge of the digital space (content and formats).

You will perform the following tasks:

  • Keep up with regional, national and international news through various sources.
  • Consult with reporters and network colleagues on what events should be given priority coverage.
  • Encourage reporters to come up with their own story ideas.
  • Maintain and update a short-, medium
- and long-term planning calendar, in conjunction with the Information Network.
  • Choose what events will be covered during the day and prepare the assignment schedule.
  • Attend planning meetings for daytoday, upcoming and specialevent coverage. Share your coverage plans with the group and read through the schedules drafted by other assignment editors. Discuss the various events to be covered, express your opinions, and take into account those of the team.
  • Assign stories to reporters and coordinate their work. Discuss with reporters what story angles to pursue and direct them accordingly. Provide them with additional documentation as needed.
  • Assess the feasibility of producers' and lineup editors' requests (e.g., live hits), based on production imperatives.
  • Closely follow developing stories. Have estimates prepared for special coverage; review and present them to management.
  • Commission reports from other newsrooms, including foreign networks. Inform the resource desk of feed requirements. Vet the content of reports, once received.
  • Review reporters' items and live hits when they go to air.
  • Follow up with reporters and assignment editors; give them feedback on their work.
  • Ensure that items under your responsibility scheduled to air in the various newscasts are ready on time.
  • Coordinate, if applicable, the work of a researcher.
  • Perform, as needed, the duties of reporter and national lineup editor.
  • Vet and occasionally edit reporters' copy.
  • Ensure that information aired is true and verified in accordance with corporate standards and policies.
  • Carry out all other related tasks as needed.

The position requires the following:

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or the equivalent
  • Seven (7) years' journalism experience or the equivalent

Skills:


  • Extensive general knowledge
  • Indepth knowledge of Quebec, national and international affairs
  • Indepth knowledge of newsroom logistics
  • Detailed knowledge of the digital news production cycle
  • Knowledge of production techniques
  • Solid understanding of the various platforms
  • Superior Frenchlanguage skills
  • Proficiency in English is an asset
  • Newsroom assignment experience is an asset
  • Ability to work well under pressure and independently
