Payroll and Benefits Clerk

Job Overview

  • Reporting to the Senior Accountant, the Payroll and Benefits Clerk is responsible for the preparation and processing of payroll for hourly and salaried employees ensuring that the full payroll cycle is completed accurately, on time, and in accordance with applicable legislation, organization policies, contracts and the collective agreement. The Payroll and Benefits Clerk also completes administrative activities related to benefit enrolment, changes and terminations and ensures benefit premiums and coverage levels are correct for all employees.
    Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Processes high volume semimonthly payroll for union hourly and salaried employees in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Processes employee benefit enrollments, changes, terminations and ensures premiums and coverage levels are set up in the HRIS system.
  • Serves as a first point of contact for internal payroll and benefits administration related requests or inquiries and provides assistance as required. Escalates any requests or inquiries to the Senior Accountant as required.
  • Reconciles payroll and benefits information reports and payments.
  • Prepares payroll summary reports for approval by the Senior Accountant.
  • Completes and issues Record of Employment (ROE) in accordance with Service Canada requirements.
  • Assists the Senior Accountant with yearend payroll tasks including T4 preparation.
  • Maintain detailed records and documentation of payroll and benefits functions for record retention and auditing purposes in accordance with statutory requirements and internal control policies and procedures.
  • Supports other positions within the Finance Department, as required.
  • Assists the Senior Accountant and the Director of Finance and Administration with special projects as requested.
  • Collaborate with HR, finance, and other departments to ensure smooth payroll operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • General knowledge of applicable BC legislation and regulatory knowledge including the Employment Standards Act
  • Good understanding of standard accounting methods and procedures
  • Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive and confidential information
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize to meet strict deadlines.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve payrollrelated issues or discrepancies.
  • Effective and efficient organization and time management skills
  • Ability to work with a variety of people in a team environment

Education, Training and Experience

  • Some post secondary education in payroll administration. Canadian Payroll Association certification is an asset.
  • Two years of prior payroll and benefits experience
  • Experience with ADP Workforce Now is required
  • Experience in a Unionized environment is an asset

Terms of Employment

  • Salary Range: $28 per hour plus comprehensive benefits
  • Full time (37.5 hours per week)
  • Starting: ASAP
  • Location: Downtown Vancouver
